"Sabrina. Who was that?" my brother inquired as soon as I sat in my seat.
"Just another guy from the show I'm in. He's like the father of the cast," I replied. As he started the car, I put in my earbuds and blasted music, not wanting to make conversation. He started one anyway.
"Hey, Sabi. Have you made any friends other than that guy?" he asked. I looked over at him, pulling out an ear bud. His hazel eyes were still focused on the road ahead. I took a moment to think of an answer, but got lost in my thoughts, as per usual. Kip looked nearly identical to our parents, with fluffy brown hair and tanned skin. I had all of their recessive traits; platinum blond hair, dark green eyes, and pale skin. I guess we don't really look related at all. No wonder people say I'm the black sheep of the family.
"I've talked to other people," I assured him. He stopped at a red light at gave me a doubtful look. "I have!" I insisted. He shook his head and he turned his eyes to the road as the light turned green.
"Like who?"
"Well, there was this audience member..."
"Sabi, that doesn't count! You didn't give out any personal info, did you?"
"Nothing too important. Just my number," I told him, whispering the last part. Kip still heard it.
"Sabrina!" he yelled. I whipped my head away from him and faced the window, gloomily watching the cars go by, the lines of the road blurring into each other. Kip sighed.
I tried to justify my position by saying, "She seemed trustworthy." We sat together in awkward silence for the remainder of the ride home. When he pulled into the driveway, I quickly got out of the car. We shared a house after our dad passed away and mom moved to our Nan's house. I waited impatiently for my brother as he came up from behind, fishing for a ring of keys from his pocket. The moment he unlocked the door I pushed past him and bolted to my room. I slammed the door shut behind me. I fumbled in the dark until I flipped on the light switch.
I stormed to my white-painted bunk bed and lay down on my back. The lavender comforter shifted under me. I closed my eyes and reached for the decorative pillow beside me. It was royal blue with the words "Love you to the Moon" embroidered on the front. I squeezed it 'til my knuckles were white. I brought it up to my face and buried my face in the cushion. I stayed there until I heard my phone ding, indicating a message. I groaned, grabbed the phone, and opened my texts. An unknown number messaged me.
"Hey! Remember me? We met at the theater," the text read. I smirked and replied with, "Yes, I remember."
"Great! I never introduced myself. My name is Brit. And you are?"
"Sabrina." I could just imagine the girl in her room, dressed all in pink, a cat in her lap and a phone in hand. Just the thought of her made me giggle. We chatted all night long about anything and everything. What our hobbies were, favorite shows, etc. I think I made a friend for life.
