Charlie sat in the garden with her grandmother, she had started daydreaming while she grandma told her a story about the crazy cat woman from two doors down.
"Dear, are you listening?" Her grandmother asked, waving her hand in front of Charlie's face.
"Yes granny. I'm sorry."
"Were you thinking about that boy? The lovely Irish one?" Granny asked, with a knowing look one her face. Charlie nodded. "Oh dear, it's always hard, losing a love."
"It was for the best, Granny." Charlie said as she sipped her tea. Her grandmother looked at her with the same expression she, herself was known for. Aidan had teased her about it often. "Granny, I wasn't going to move across the world to be with a guy I only dated four months. That would be fair to the kids, and I wasn't going to ask him to put his life on hold to be with me."
"My dear Charlotte, you are always so concerned with others, you don't ever think of yourself." Granny said, patting Charlie's cheek. "Did you know, I only knew your grandpa for three days before I knew he was the one?" Granny reminisced.
"That's sweet Granny."
"I just want you to be happy, dear." Her granny sighed as she started to clear the table.

Charlie had a terrible feeling in her stomach as she sat in the waiting room of the hospital. She had known something was wrong when her grandmother didn't come over for breakfast, and when she didn't answer her phone Charlie started to worry. She had decided to call her grandmother's neighbour to ask if she could check in on her.
Charlie stood to talk to the doctor, keeping her eye on the kids as they coloured .
"Miss Baker?" He asked, she nodded. She could hear her heart pumping in her ears. "I'm so sorry, there was nothing we could do. It appears to have been a stroke. She's holding on, but just barely. I can take you to see her." The doctor told her.
A nurse offered to stay in the hall way with Logan and Daisy while Charlie went in. She took a deep breath and went in. Her grandmother looked so tiny in the hospital bed. Charlie walked over and took her hand in hers, her skin was cold.
Charlie was stilling in the hallway of the hospital, they had shuttled her out of the room after a bunch of alarms went off.
"Miss Baker, I'm so sorry. "The nurse said, putting her hand on Charlie's shoulder. "Is there someone we can call?"
There was only one person Charlie wanted to talk to, only one person who could make her feel like she wasn't being ripped apart, and she had no clue where he was.
