Kyara stared at the television mounted on the wall of the small but cozy apartment, absolutely dumbfounded. It was her. She was on TV. Earlier that month she had anonymously posted a video of herself singing "Little Things" on YouTube. How it ended up on the national news channel was unknown to her.
Reluctantly, she pried her eyes away from the screen as her home phone rang obnoxiously. As soon as she put the damned thing to her ear she was assaulted by the excited screams of her best friend. Kyara had known Emma from since preschool, and she and the curly haired girl had been practically joined at the hip up till now.
"Are you watching the news?! Scarlett! That's you, idiot!!" Kyara flinched at the use of her birth name. Scarlett Jameson. She had changed it after high school, hoping to leave the bad memories that came along with the name behind as well.
"Yeah... That's me... How the hell did they find that video...?" Kyara grimaced at the sound of her own voice playing softly through the speakers.
"Isn't it obvious? You've been discovered, Scarlett!" The girl's shrieks made Kyara want to bang her head against the granite counters repeatedly
"Please... Stop calling me that. Anyway... I guess I should check Twitter... Who knows what's happening on there right now." She grumbled. "I'll DM you, ok? Bye" Kyara pressed the end button without waiting for an answer from her beloved friend.
As she walked to her bed room, she was stopped by her faint reflection in the darkened bathroom. Slowly, she scanned her own body. The girl had long blonde hair, that curled softly into very loose ringlets. Her golden hair framed her delicately featured face. Her lips were always a soft red and her cheeks a rosy pink. The thing that people always seemed to notice first were her bright turquoise eyes, that looked straight into your soul. She had gained the unnaturally colored eyes when the government had decided to put her and other students on the serum. Moving on from her face, she was a thin girl, but she would never think that.
Kyara had suffered from depression and anorexia since she was 13. With a small sigh, Kyara closed the bathroom door and walked into her room with her shoulder slumped into a defeated position. When Kyara did finally open her Twitter, she was surprised to say the least.
Kyara had spent the entire rest of her day looking through her notifications, replying to every comment, every question, and every rumor. When she was finally done she looked at her clock that read "11:34 pm". With a soft sigh she Tweeted to her new followers
@Kyara- "Hey guys! I guess my video was shown on the news this morning. I'd love to answer any questions you have about myself!"
The cyan eyed girl raised an eyebrow at one question in particular.
@Directionerrrr- "I don't really know who you are but you sang 1D so.... Ur cool I guess. What's your full name?"
The question made Kyara shift in her fluffy bed with a small frown on her lips
@Kyara- "@Directionerrrr Gotta love those boys, huh? Anyway I don't have a full name. I used to but now my name is just Kyara."
She got lots of follow up questions on that Tweet. Some made her smile, some made her frown sourly.
@JakeIsHawt- "She probably sold drugs or did pot so she had to change her name."
@SelenaIsLife- "Maybe she's a hooker and needed to change her name so daddy didn't find out"
Ouch. That one hurt. Kyara was a virgin. Hard to believe, right? It was the year 2019 and virgins above the age of 16 were about as common as singing goats. Kyara was about to turn off her computer for the night when a mention caught her eye.
@ZaynMalik- "New girl's got herself a set of lungs. The boys are excited to see what else she can do. Good luck @Kyara :) X"
Holy shit. Kyara had to remind herself to start breathing again. Her idol and celebrity crush had not only noticed her but complimented her on her voice. That was a lot coming from most singers these days. They could all hear the smallest flaws in voices.
In the year 2013 things started to change for the human race. Doctors had discovered a serum that virtually stopped the aging process in most people under thirty. Every celebrity with money was instantly on the stuff, and One Direction was no exception.
The general population starting receiving the treatment in 2015, when the price dropped drastically. That's when the government decided to give the serum for free to high school students in the top 5% of their class. They received small doses of the drug every day, and were given the full serum when they decided to stop their aging. Kyara didn't know when she would stop. She couldn't quite bring herself to think about the future more than a month in advance.
Kyara snapped back to reality with a jerk. With a sleepy sigh she closed her laptop and burrowed deeper into the comforting warmth of her bed. She had gone from completely off the charts, to being noticed by her idol in less than 24 hours. Little did she know, there was plenty more where that came from.
