CHAPTER ONE: LIFE AFTER DEATH
When death is only seconds away, it's dark and twisted ways creeping from the safety of its shadows into a place you once called your own, is the moment you finally realise just how much you've got to live for and in that second I realise just how much I want to live.
I could see the end coming, I could taste it upon my tounge, feel it against my skin as my fragile form collided painfully with the tarmac road. The deafening squeals of tyres and the burning of rubber overwhelmed me which I presumed was the lorry drawing closer and closer which would in result be my death.
I grasp my eyes shut anticipating for the force of the lorry against my bones and body. It doesn't happen but the smell of rubber is so overwhelming I have to clench down on my teeth to stop myself from retching.
When the impact of the lorry doesn't appear hit home I find the inner strength to prise my eyes open. The picture in front of me leaves me wide eyed in horror. The lorry stationary and parked only centimetres away, onlookers frozen in fear their mouths wide open in aghast.
Who knew what they saw.
A young girl 'falling' or a young girl 'jumping', who knew?
Suddenly the race to reach me kicked in, the lorry driver, people and strangers I hardly knew encircled me their phones pressed to their ears as they frantically called for emergency help. So many questions and instructions firing at me my brain ached more than my limp body. I tried focusing on one person at a time trying to make sense of what they we're saying.
'In shock' floated around like a cloud riding the breeze and that's when I heard it.
"She jumped...she just stepped out... she must of seen me..I swear there was nothing more I could do...she just walked right out" it was the broken voice of the Lorry driver. The crowd silenced and I felt a mixture of accusing and sympathetic eyes.
Too much of my body's protest I pushed myself from the ground doubling in over agony as it shot around me in all directions. There were I few desperate cries of alarm as I staggered through the crowd before breaking into a uneven run.
A silent tear escaped from my blurred vision as my body now screamed in retaliation and I couldn't help but notice that not one person had been worried about me enough to follow.
I came to a sudden halt besides a deserted alleyway and sunk to the floor finally defeated.
"Whatever you think you're going through is bad just remember there's always someone else worse off"
The sudden voice made me jump and I turned to the source of noise squinting to make out the dark silhouette leant against the wall, the dark figure turned so the light shone directly on them, two piercing green eyes bore into mine. A mop of black hair effortlessly swept over their right eye, a skateboard proper up against his leg and a cigarette in his right hand. He looked dangerous and reckless and yet at the same time I was fascinated as his eyes held mine.
"Like I said, there's always someone else worse off, it might help to remember that sometimes" he said in his raspy voice before narrowing his eyes at me and slinking off out the alley pressing the now dying cigarette against the wall of the alley.
