I walk outside and the sun shines on my shoulder, it's touch feeling amazing on my arm. It's warmth makes me forget about our adventure, and leaving the only home I've ever known. I hop on my bike, and start riding calmly, enjoying the beautiful weather. I subconsciously look at my watch, and it gives me a jarring shake back to reality. It reads 7:55.
Melissa's voice echoes in my head.
"Be there at 8:00.. or else!"
I know it was just a silly joke, but I could tell it was important not to be late, not on something as important as this. This plan was fragile - one wrong move could ruin the whole thing. I start pedaling faster and faster, the my hair all over the place. Finally, I see the town hall, and a tall blonde girl standing impatiently next to it.
"What took you so long?" she asked,
exasperated."What do you mean?" I huffed, trying to catch my breath. "It's 8:00,"
"I said be there BY eight," Melissa replied, enunciating the by.
I rolled my eyes. "Whatever," I stated, still exhausted from the workout it took to get here.
"What's next?" I ask, and a realization plummets into my head.
I'm actually doing this. I'm leaving the town.Regret for agreeing to this plan clouds my mind, and I suddenly can't think straight.
I faintly hear Melissa speaking, but nothing is focus. All of my senses are blurred. Black spots invade my vision, and soon I see nothing, I'm suddenly so weak, too weak. I fall to the ground, and everything is blackened.
Cold water rushes onto my face, getting into my nose and mouth. I spit it out, but the taste of lake water still lingers in my mouth.
"Ryles, you're okay!" Melissa squeals, a grin on her face. "What happened to you?"
"Why was I on the grass?" I say, disoriented and confused.
Melissa gives no response, she's already moved on with our plan.
"See that over there?" she points to Harley Mt., an intimidating mountain with a dangerous height.
I really hope this isn't going where I think it is, I think to myself.
"We are going to climb it," she states boldly, a spark in her eyes. I can tell that Melissa likes this sort of stuff.
Me? Not in a million years.
"What?" I screech, a bit too loudly. "We're climbing THAT?"
"Keep it down!" Melissa whispers back, obviously annoyed. "We could get arrested!"
"What?" I screech, again, even louder than before. If she was trying to help my anxiety, it wasn't working.
"It's illegal to climb the mountain," she says as if she was talking to a baby, as if everyone knew this fact.
"Let's just start," I quickly whisper, scared of what's to come. The sooner we start, the sooner we finish, right?
"That's the spirit!" she squeals joyfully, a grin forming on her face. She marches ahead confidently, no fear visible.
It's bizarre that she's so happy about this, she's leaving her home, her family. I dismiss it - and desperately try to imitate her.
Suddenly, Melissa stops.
"What happened?" I ask, but I get an unclear response.
"Nothing, just go ahead," she says weirdly, and I see that she's nervous.
"Why can't you?" I ask questioningly, my eyes narrowing into slits. I can tell she's hiding something.
Melissa sighs in defeat. "Fine, just look." She moves over, uncovering a small billboard hanging on a tree.
My mouth opens, and shock hits me suddenly.
