We pull away from each other, wiping our tears away.

"What are we going to tell... them?" I tilt my head towards our "friends". My mind fills with pure jealousy.

"We don't have to tell them," she whispers, a sly smile on her face.

"What if they ASK?" I reply, rolling my eyes.

"I've got a plan," she starts, her eyes shining. "We lie to them, and the-"

"Training starts tomorrow, they'll figure out sooner or later," I mutter, exasperated. I knew Melissa wasn't the sharpest knife, but I thought she was better than this! "That's your plan?"

"No, you didn't even let me finish!" she speaks loudly, rolling her eyes. "Then, we-". She abruptly stops, as if pondering something. Her face suddenly has a serious look, as if she's done something wrong.

"If I tell you this plan - you have to promise not to tell anyone about it, and you have to promise to go along with me," Melissa whispers, her face serious. "I can't just spill it to anyone, I'd be outed too quickly."

I stiffen, not sure what to say. I
don't even know what the plan is, how am I supposed to know whether I want to go along with it or not. My gut feeling tells me I should say yes, and it's usually right. I mean, I got a bad future, didn't I?

"Fine," I say abruptly, not thinking. "Tell me." As soon as I say those words, I regret it, but I stay silent.

"Tonight, we're escaping the city," Melissa says, a broad smile across her face.

My face, however, goes completely pale. "'Melissa, it's almost impossible to leave the city," I start, my eyes widening. "Do you know how many people have died trying?"

"Ryles, trust me," her voice gentle and quiet. "I've been planning this since I was 10, just in case something like this happened".

I'm taken aback, I never thought that Melissa would be this smart. "What do I tell my parents?"

"Lie to them, tell them you're a supermodel or something," she whispers quickly. "Tell then you need a suitcase to pack for training."

"Then what?" I say, my heartbeat fastening.

"Pack for our journey, and bring at least 2000 dollars with you," she whispers, looking around to make sure no ones watching.

2000 dollars might seem like a lot, but it's nothing for me. "Anything else?"

"Meet at 8:00 at town hall," she whispers creepily. "Or else."

I giggle. Even in situations like this, Melissa always manages to make me laugh.

Our limo honks outside. Melissa and I look at each other. We walk into the limo silently, while everyone else is still laughing over whatever they were talking about in the waiting room.

"Hey, where were you guys?" Taylor says to us.

I have no idea what to say, so I stay silent.

"Oh, we were just helping out the people in line, telling them to be calm and stuff," Melissa says calmly.

I sigh in relief.

"So, what's your future?" she asks. All eyes are on us.

I freeze. I am not a good liar.

Melissa, noticing my nervousness, speaks up for the both of us. "We're both supermodels."

"Cool!" our friends chime, and go back to their own things. The rest of the ride, I am silent, preparing for our journey. Soon, we arrive at my house.

I wave goodbye to all of my friends, and wink at Melissa.

"8 o clock," she mouths to me, a small smile on her face.

I slowly walk up the stairs, my heart pounding, about the face the most important lie of my life. I ring the doorbell, talking deep breaths. They open the door, smiling and hugging me. I laugh, feeling so warm. They sit me down on the couch. A pang of guilt runs through me. I'm going to escape them after they've done so much for me.

"So, what's your future?" my mom asks, holding my arm tightly.

In that moment, I want to stay with them forever and ever, in their warmth and love. Without thinking, I say this.

"I'm a maid."
