The room was very bright. I wasn’t quite sure where I was but the room looked very familiar. There was a machine next to me beeping. You could see the line on the machine where my pulse was going. I tried to focus on the little machine but my eyes kept getting blurry. When I turned my head over there was a large man standing there. He wore a white coat. His little nametag in the top right of his shirt read the name Mr. Hortman. He had brown hair that was cut short and spiked up. He didn’t look very old. He was probably in his late thirties. He was talking to me. I couldn’t figure out what he was saying to me but I knew he was talking to me because his lips were moving.
“Mrs. Jerkins? Can you hear me?” Dr. Hortman asked.
“Uh...y-ye-yeah,” I stuttered.
“How do you feel? Any pain?”
“No, I don’t think so. Why?”
“Curious. I put you on some morphine. You are pretty banged up. You were out for almost two days. Your mother has been worried sick. She will be here in about an hour. Are you hungry?”
Come to think of it I was hungry. Very hungry.
“Yes,” I replied.
“Well I will go fetch you something to eat. What would you like? Turkey sandwich? Ham? Roast beef?”
“Roast beef sounds good, can I have some chips and a large diet coke with it?”
“Of course, I’ll be right back. The nurse will come in, in about a couple minutes to check up on you. If you need anything press the red button on your remote to call her.
“Thanks,” I said.
A few minutes later the nurse walked in. She was very beautiful. She had dark brown hair that was straight as a board that went down to the middle of her back. She looked like she was about in her forties. She wore red nail polish with sparkles on them that made her brown eyes pop out. She was very tan and looked as if she tans for a living.
“How are you feeling?” she asked as she brought in my roast beef sandwich with jalapeño chips and a large diet coke. She set my lunch down on the tray next to me. It was about one thirty in the afternoon.
“Pretty good, better that I got something to eat. My head hurts a little bit. Why is that? Did I fall?” I asked.
“Not sure sweet pea, I will ask Dr. Hortman. He will know. I’ll run and get you a pain pill for your head. I can’t give you too much though, Dr. Hortman put you on morphine to bring down the pain from the burns.”
Burns? I was burnt. How? I don’t remember being burnt at all. All I remember is a force field being around me while I watched my English teacher burn to death.
“I am so worried about Stacey. I just can’t get her off my mind. I don’t know what to do!” I said.
“Oh, come on Jake. It’s a girl. I thought you were gay? I mean. Dude. You got her PREGNANT. You should be happy right?” Kayden asked.
“Yea, I thought I was gay. Maybe it was just a phase? How do you know she’s pregnant? She may not be. I haven’t heard anything from her since the ambulance took her to the hospital. I know that I went and saw her a couple times but the doctor said that she was in a coma.”
“Jake, you’re being so ridiculous. If you really can’t get her off of your mind then lets go see her right now!”
“Right now? But we’re in class. We can’t just skip?”
“Why not? I’ve done it plenty of times before.”
“That’s you not me! Oh, what the heck. Lets do it.”
