The reader will meet Peggy fields and her family and various neighbours who live together in a common lodging house in an east end London slum.
The reader will then meet a London tailor by the name of Henry Parker and his family, along with delivery boy, Charlie Barrow.
Lastly the reader will be introduced to The Honourable, Miss Eleanore St. Claire. She comes to the city for the 1873 London season, along with an entourage made up of rather close friends.
