We arrived at the theater half an hour later. We were standing outside and Alex was asking someone from his entourage where the others where. He gave us quick instructions, Alex thanked him. I said:” See you later, Bob”, while we were walking away.
“Why’d you call him Bob?” Alex asked confused while we were walking towards the park. According to Bob; Matt, Jamie and Nick were in the park, across the street, playing football.
“He looks like a Bob”, I answered his question.
It was still very sunny and warm. It was a beautiful day to be honest, but I just wanted to go inside, because my eyes wouldn’t stop fucking hurting.
“What do you mean, ‘he looks like a Bob’?”
I stopped and looked him in the eye. How was I going to explain this?
“You know, some people just have an everyday face, they look like Bob’s. Nothing special ‘bout them. Plus I’m really bad at remembering names”, I finished with a smirk.
“Is that why you won’t tell me your name?” he asked dead serious.
No… God!I started speed walking again crossing the streets towards the park. He could easily follow me with his long legs. I started explaining:” The point is, some people just have names that are made for their faces and behavior. Those names I can remember. The people I hang out with just give me a name they like. I’ve been loads of people.”
“So you think your name doesn’t fit you. Is that it?”
No.
“Yes.”Suddenly I heard a car hit the breaks. I screamed and looked up. Cruel memories I locked away for years suddenly came back in flashes. I saw the car coming right towards me and my scream went shriller. Something pulled me back, so the car slipped past me. I felt the sunglasses slip of my nose from this sudden movement. Then I realized what pulled me back, better yet who pulled me back!
Alex had grabbed my hand, pulling me backwards. I now stood against his body, shaking from the shock.
“”Ay you alright love? Look at me”, his voice cut through my thoughts.
I slowly lifted my head and at that moment I realized there were tears rolling down my face.
His pupils widened as he saw the tears, he put his arms around me and kept whispering:” It’s okay, easy love. You’re safe.”
“Thank you”, I whispered against his chest. And for some reason I believed him, I really felt safe.
I don’t know how long we stood there but it felt like forever.
I looked up, meeting his eyes, his beautiful, brown eyes. We didn’t speak, I was clearly aware of how close our bodies were. He slowly rubbed his hand over my back and I stopped shivering.“’Ey Al, get a room!” a voice screamed from across the street. We let go of each other in an instant.
I stepped away from Alex and looked at the other side of the street. There were the Agile Beast, Contemporary Jesus and Cookie. Aka, in that same order, Matt Helders, Nick O’Malley and Jamie Cook. I looked down searching for Alex’ glasses. I quickly grabbed them put them on and put on my rock ‘n roll vibe. Hiding the fact that I was crying earlier. They stopped in front of us.
“’Ey guys, long time no see”, Alex smiled awkwardly.
“Cut the crap Al”, Jesus spit.
“Yeah, who’s this gorgeous blonde?” Cookie smiled at me.
I looked at Alex and he had it covered, I saw it in his eyes:” This is Avery, I met her… well this night.”
Avery? Really? Why not call me Hooker with the capital H from, oh yeah Hoe?
“Avery can speak for herself”, I smiled at Alex,” just Ave… Eve” I corrected myself.
The Agile Beast shook my hand and said:” Hi, Just Eve, I’m Matthew J Helders the Third, but you can call me Matt.”
I decided I had to make a joke:” Hi You-Can-Call-Me-Matt.”
Contemporary Jesus laughed aloud. “Hello Jamie and Nick”, I smiled at them.
“I assume, either you are a creepy stalker or you know the band”, Jamie said.
“Both,” I whispered.
We all started laughing.
“She’s funny, I like her”, You-Can-Call-Me-Matt said.
