Change:

I'm not crazy about the word, that's for sure. "All change is good" Mary (my mother) would tell me time and time again but the sad part is I think she actually believed it.

Standing in an empty room with boxes of my things is not what I want to be doing on a Saturday night. Mary decided it was finally time to move in with her fiancé Bill and his son Dylan. "take the next step as a family" she said. I can't believe she thought I would willingly move into a house with people I have never met. Bill is all she has talked about for the past six months and he sounds like a decent guy I guess. She hasn't really mentioned Dylan too much though, is all I know is that he is a year older then me but that's pretty much it.

I start pulling clothes out of boxes and loading them into a white dresser at the far end of the room opposite of the bed. On the right wall is a closet and bathroom and on the left side are doors that open to a balcony I think. I can imagine spending a lot of time out there reading and drawing...maybe this won't be so bad after all.

"Kalli dinner!" Mary yelled from somewhere on the first floor. Great now I have to try not to get lost between here and the huge ass kitchen.

When I finally find it everyone is sat at a long oak table staring at me. Mary sat next to an older man with shoulder length blonde hair and hazel eyes. Across from him was a much younger guy with curly brown hair and bright blue eyes, when I looked at him he waved and looked down.

"Oh dear you must be Kalli!" The older man said with excitement (who I assume is Bill) well then...

"Nice to meet you" I said walking to the only empty seat next to the blue eyed boy who has to be Dylan and looked down into a bowl of green stuff that definitely did not look edible. Mary never could cook, after my dad died I always did the cooking but I guess Bill has yet to experience one of her 'creations'

I looked over and Dylan was eyeing the bowl with worry, now that I look at him he is really hot! He has curly brown hair that falls into his blue eyes just a little, and his plain black v-neck is tight enough to show the curves of his muscles. Hold it together Kalli he is going to be your step brother soon.

I leaned over to whisper to Dylan that he probably shouldn't eat whatever that was supposed to be but he just gave me a confused look and didn't say anything. Is there something on my face? Did I talk loud enough? does he just not want to talk to me?

"Oh honey Dylan is deaf" Bill said and signed looking over at me and it finally clicked. He couldn't understand me! I nodded at Bill and turned towards Dylan.

"Sorry I didn't know"I signed to him embarrassed and everyone at the table looked at me in shock.

"It's ok" "my name is Dylan" he signed back much faster and I almost didn't catch it all

"Kalli" I signed back and he nodded back at me "Pizza?" I asked and he immediately stood up and told me to tell them what we wanted to do.

"Hey mom we appreciate dinner but we aren't really hungry so Dylan is going to show me around town" I told her and fallowed Dylan to the front door before she could protest, where he grabbed Keys and pointed to a sleek black truck.

It's not really like me to go on drives with strangers but something about Dylan made me want to get to know him. I'm also hungry but I was not putting that gunk in my mouth so pizza sounds amazing. As we drove down a long empty street I couldn't help looking over at a relaxed Dylan, his eyes looked so sad and it kind of made me sad too. I have no idea what life's like for him but I imagine it isn't very easy with the whole language barrier thing.

Once we arrived at 'Joes Pizzeria' I grabbed a table and he went to go order the pizza before coming to sit across from me in the booth I picked in the corner. I'm not really a fan of crowds, or really just people in general.

"How do you know asl?" Dylan asked when he got back and I told him about a deaf culture class I took and about my friends parents being deaf.

A Hawaiian pizza came a few moments later and I was in pizza heaven. After three slices day lab looked at me and laughed

"Like?" he asked and I blushed and nodded yes "same" and I smiled at him. I'm starting to like seeing Dylan laugh and smile. He doesn't seem like he does it very often.

A few hours and a whole pizza later we headed home and I went to finish unpacking while everyone else watched tv.

Maybe change wasn't going to be so bad after all...
