Prologue (Courtney's Perspective)

Living with my parents has been anything but easy my whole life. That's because my parents never really wanted me. They only birthed me so they could raise me to do chores. How do I know this? I overheard them talking from my room one night. My parents treat me like I am a nobody. They call me really offensive names as if I don't have a real name. I do have a real name, and it's Courtney. Courtney Greene. So you might want to ignore the insults that are most likely coming my way today. Although that might not be very easy because my parents talk like they are at a football stadium when their buttons are pushed. You wouldn't want to be on their bad side...trust me. I've been treated badly since I was four. I'm fourteen now. I'm forced to do everything around the house like Cinderella. I cook, clean, scrub toilets, do laundry, everything. You name it. My parents do absolutely nothing. If I forget to do one thing or make the slightest mistake, they yell and beat me, which would explain all my bruises. I lost count of how many bruises I have after ten. The only friend I feel the closest too is my little chocolate lab puppy. I rescued her from a vicious pack of stray dogs while I was taking out the trash two months ago. Poor thing. I named her Franny, and all this time, I have been hiding her from my parents. Please don't tell them.

Most would think the child is mean like their parents in this situation, but really, I'm just a normal fourteen year old girl with long wavy blonde hair, brown eyes, light skin, and a good personality. If only I could escape my parents and this nasty run down house for a better family though.

ORPHAN ESCAPE

Chapter 1

Enough is enough

It was a warm, yet rainy, Tuesday morning at the Greene's house in Tampa, Florida. Courtney had just woken up. As she sat on the edge of her bed rubbing her eyes and Franny licking her ankles, she thought about what she would be in for once again.

"Well, another miserable day. They're probably not even going to say good morning to me," said Courtney with a sigh. "But might as well try to make the best of it." Courtney got up, brushed her teeth and hair, and put on her least favorite outfit; a green worn out shirt with jeans, an old hair flower, and flip flops that were too small for her. She went downstairs.

Courtney's mom was in the living room sitting on the couch watching soap opera next to her father who was drinking and puffing a cigarette. Courtney's mother may look like Courtney, but her personality sure wasn't the same. Her name was Doris. Courtney's father had tan skin, dark spiky hair, and blood shot eyes but naturally brown. His name was Boris. As the room filled with the smell of cigarettes, Courtney's eyes watered and she began to cough. How could her parents sit in a room that smelled this bad?! She walked over to the window and opened it.

"Morning mom. Morning dad," said Courtney.

No response.

    "Um, good morning?"

No response.

"Mom? Dad? Can you hear me?"

Doris paused the TV.

"Obviously you idiot!" said Doris rolling her eyes.

"Were just busy at the moment if you don't mind!" said Boris chiming in.

"I'm sorry. I just wanted to say good morning. I'm also kind of hungry too" said Courtney all defensive.

"Go making yourself something then," snapped Doris.

"Actually, I was kind of hoping you could make me something?"

"Well, tough! Go make it yourself! And scrub the floors and clean the bathroom when you're done too!
