Orphan Escape
Chapter 7
The Escape

Miss Jones was across from Courtney's room. She decided to wait until her light was off and knew for sure she was asleep. After thirty minutes, Courtney was sure, so she grabbed her walkie talkie and called the other orphans except for Taylor.
"Okay orphans! Are you ready to escape?" she whispered through the walkie talkie.
"Yes!" the orphans whispered through their walkie talkie.
"Okay so remember: we will each go to a place in the orphanage and look for a key for the front door. But we have to go one at a time because if we go all at once, Miss Jones will easily hear us. Kendal?"
            "Yes?" whispered Kendal.
"I need you to look for the key first."
"But I can't do it Courtney! I'll get caught!"
"Not if you're careful! You're small so she won't hear you that easily."
            "But Courtney! I'm scared!"
"I know Kendal, but you have to be big and brave for me tonight. Just go look, and everything will be over before you know it, and we will get a much better care taker! You can talk to me on the walkie talkie along the way too."
Kendal thought about what Courtney said for a good ten seconds.
"Okay. I'll do it," said Kendal.
"Thanks Kendal!" said Courtney gratefully. "Now remember what I told you: slow easy steps at a time. And keep your voice as low as it can go, or don't talk at all. Good luck Kendal! And be careful!"
Courtney hung up the walkie talkie.
Kendal grabbed her back pack and left her room and slowly but surely snuck down to the basement. She took out her flashlight and looked around. There are disgusting scary looking spiders everywhere, but she tried not to look at them as she looked for the key. Courtney called Kendal.
"Any luck Kendal?" asked Courtney through the walkie talkie.
"No, except I found a black box in the corner!" said Kendal
"That's probably what's hiding it! Now go open it and see!"
Just when Kendal was about to take the black box, she realized that a huge spider web with a huge spider was blocking it,
"Courtney I can't do it!! There's a big spider web with a spider almost as big as my hand! I can't do it!!"
"Kendal please! Isn't there anything down there, like a stick you can use to move it out of the way with?"
            "No?"
            'Then use you're bare hands."
            "What? No I can't!"
"Please Kendal? Right now you're our only hope. Those are house spiders so they won't hurt you.
            "Are you sure?"
"Yes. I have to get off now for a little bit and make sure Miss Jones doesn't wake up. You can do it Kendal!"
            Courtney hung up.
"I can do it! I have to!" Kendal bravely said.
Kendal closed her eyes, and shoved her hand right through the spider web and grabbed the box. The spider ended up on her arm but Kendal slapped it right off bravely.
The black box Kendal picked up had multi colored shape buttons on the back side. All she had to do was figure out how to open it by pressing them until she gets the combination correct.
"It's a code?! Well, I have to open it!" said Kendal to herself. "Courtney and the other orphans are counting on me! Maybe if I do this-"

CODE ATTEMPT # 1 = circle, square, oval, triangle, (The last three numbers made farting noises which meant she got it wrong).
"Hmm, maybe I could try this:"
CODE ATTEMPT # 2 = circle, circle, (fart)
"Ugh! This is hard! Wait! I have an idea!"
CODE ATTEMPT # 3 = Circle, oval, square, triangle.
The box made a pretty sound and flipped open with the key on the inside. Kendal called Courtney on her walkie talkie.
"Courtney! I did it!! I have the first key now!!"
"Good job Kendal! I knew you could do it! Now I need you to keep the key safe in your pocket, go hide behind the couch, and not say a word."
            "Okay."
Kendal hung up, put the key in her pocket, went back upstairs, and hid behind the couch.
"Okay Marvin!" said Courtney. "Kendal found the first key! Now it's your turn to look for the second key. Be careful!"
Marvin quickly and quietly grabbed his walkie talkie and his bags and quietly sneaked to the backyard to investigate. There were all red alarm laser lights blocking the shed across the back yard in front of the shed.
Marvin started jumping over and crawling under and going around the red lights trying so very hard not to trigger the alarm. One wrong move, it's all over.
After a long five minutes of avoiding the red lights, Marvin successfully reached the shed door, took out his paper clip, and picked the lock until it opened. He grabbed the key from the inside of the shed. But right when Marvin turned around, he tripped on a stick and fell right through the red lights and the alarm started blaring very loudly. Marvin frantically took out his walkie talkie.
"Guys! Pretend your sleeping!! Miss Jones is going to wake up! Kendal stay where you are!!"
All the other orphans got back under their blankets and pretended to be asleep.
"Marvin hide behind the shed!! Miss Jones is coming!" Courtney whispered shouted into the receiver.
Marvin hid behind the shed, and just like what Courtney said, Miss Jones went to the back yard to see what flipped on the alarm, but saw nothing. She turned off the alarm. Miss Jones rolled her eyes
            "Animals these days!" she said.
Miss Jones went back inside grumpily.
Miss Jones walked back to her room but then heard a little sneeze. It was Kendal. She then slowly and slowly, approached the couch to look behind it. Just when she was about to spot Kendal, Franny started crying.
"Ugh!!! I said shut up you dumb mutt!!!" she screamed as she walked back to her room. Once Miss Jones slammed the door shut and went to sleep, the escape plan was resumed.
Meanwhile is the backyard, Marvin was super relieved that he didn't get caught. He headed back inside and called Courtney.
"Okay Courtney! I got the second key!" Marvin said proudly.
"Good job Marvin! Now go wait behind the couch with Kendal." Courtney hung up.
Marvin did what Courtney told him to do.
"Are you okay Kendal?" asked Marvin quietly.
"Yes! But she almost found me when I sneezed!" said Kendal quietly.
"You have to be quiet okay? You're going to get us all in trouble."
            "Okay."
            Courtney called the orphans.
"Alright guys! We have just found our second key. Autumn, you're up next!" Courtney said and then hung up.
"Autumn quietly left her room with her things and went into the kitchen to look around. But Autumn couldn't find the third key anywhere. She looked in every possible hiding spot. Well, every hiding spot except for one. She looked up, and saw the key duct taped to the ceiling.
"Great! Just great!" said Autumn as she rolled her eyes and pulled out her walkie talkie.
"Courtney, what do I do? The third key is taped to the ceiling!" said Autumn quietly.
"Stack some things up and get it down." Courtney suggested.
            "Alright."
Autumn stacked a bunch of random boxes and items on top of each other and climbed to the top. But Autumn began to lose her balance.
"Woah waa woahhhhhhh!!" she went. But Autumn did manage to keep balance and rip the key off the ceiling. Right on the tall tower she made, she called Courtney and told her that she got the key off the wall.
"Good job Autumn. Now hold onto the key and go hide with Marvin and Kendal."
"Okay Courtney. Wow! This plan is working perfectlyyyyyaaaaaaaa!!!"
Autumn fell and crashed hard on the floor face first.
"Autumn?! Autumn?! Can you hear me?! Autumn?! Are you okay??!!" Courtney whisper shouted into the walkie talkie.
"No! I fell and hurt my arm and head," whispered Autumn about to cry."
"Okay! Well help you with it later. But HIDE!!! MISS JONES IS COMING AGAIN!!!" said Courtney whisper screaming.
Autumn jumped into one of the cabinets and quickly shut the door. Miss Jones came in two minutes after and saw the huge mess on the floor.
"What a mess!!! Who the heck did this??!!" said Miss Jones angrily.
Miss Jones decided she was way too tired to clean up the mess and figure out who did it.
"Something fishy sure is going on tonight." said Miss Jones.
She left and went back to bed.
"Courtney? Come in Courtney," said Autumn into the walkie talkie. "She didn't catch me, and I have the key, but we need to hurry up and finish the plan. Miss Jones is getting suspicious!"
"Okay. We well try to speed things up," said Courtney. "Go wait behind the couch with Marvin and Kendal.
Autumn did just as she was told all while supporting her bad arm with her good arm.
"Okay Bailey. It's your turn. You know the drill."
"Okay," said Bailey.
Bailey quickly and quietly grabbed her stuff and went to the bathroom to investigate. She had her flashlight with her, so she switched it on and looked in the tub, the drain, behind the mirror, on the ceiling, behind the toilet, and then she decided to look down the drain.
"I found the key!" Bailey said to herself. "Now if I can just......." Bailey tried to get the key out of the drain with her bare hands, but no matter how hard she tried, she just couldn't retrieve it. "Ugh! I can't reach it!" Then, Bailey had an idea. She took out a paper clip she was saving in her back pocket, bent it into a long hook, and put it down the drain hoping the key would just slide onto the hook. No luck. "Well, I'm going to have to do this the hard way."
Bailey found a wrench under the sink. She went under and unscrewed one of the pipes with it. But when she pulled the piece of pipe off, a gallon of water drenched her face, hair, and clothes. "Ugh! Really?"
Bailey pulled the key out of the pipe and then called Courtney.
"Courtney! I found the fourth key in the sink drain!!" she said through the walkie talkie
"Good work Bailey! Now you know what to do next."
Bailey shoved the key into her pocket and quietly sneaked behind the couch with Marvin, Kendal, and Autumn who was crying and holding her crooked and bruised arm.
"Guys! Were almost out of here!" Bailey whispered.
"I'm so happy! We can finally get rid of Miss Jones!" Kendal whispered.
"And then we have to get Autumn to the hospital. I think her arm is broken," said Marvin.
"What?! Let me see!" Bailey took a good look at Autumn's arm. "Oh my gosh!" Bailey took off her sweatshirt and put it around Autumn's neck supporting her arm. "That should help until you get an X-ray."
"Thanks," said Autumn with a little smile.
"Okay guys! We now have found four keys. Now we're at the final phase of the plan. Stay where you four are. I'm going to look back for the last key," whispered Courtney on the walkie talkie.
"Okay Courtney. Be careful!" whispered Marvin.
"You can do it Courtney! I believe in you!" whispered Autumn.
"Don't get caught!" whispered Bailey
"Good luck Courtney," whispered Kendal.
"Thanks guys! I'm going to need it."
Courtney got off her bed, grabbed her bag, and sneaked out of her room. She then went to Miss Jones' room. Courtney took a deep breath.
"Okay Courtney. Once you go in, there's no turning back. So don't get scared," Courtney said to herself.
Courtney slowly and quietly opened the door. She saw Miss Jones and Taylor sleeping in their beds. Courtney got down onto her stomach and slowly crawled to Miss Jones' dresser, but then heard a bark. It was Franny happily getting her attention.
"Franny no!!!" Courtney whisper shouted.
Miss Jones woke up and then sat up in bed. Courtney quickly slid under her bed to keep from being seen. Franny was barking so much that she woke up Miss Jones. Miss Jones threw a high heal at the cage.
"QUIET FRISKY!! OR FIDO!!! WHATEVER YOUR NAME IS. SHUT UP!!" screamed Miss Jones. Franny stopped barking.
Miss Jones laid back down in her bed and went to sleep. Courtney crawled back to Franny's cage.
"Franny baby!! I'm so glad you're okay!!" Courtney whispered. "Hold on! I'll get you out of there!"
Courtney picked the lock with her paper clip and it opened. Courtney held her back pack open for Franny.
"Alright Franny, get into my back pack" Courtney whispered. Franny did what she was told.
Okay, now where's that fifth key? Courtney wondered.
Courtney searched all over the room quietly. But when she looked at Miss Jones sleeping, she saw the key tied on a string around her neck. How on earth is she going to get the key off her without waking her up?!  Courtney took out her pocket knife and started cutting at the wool yarn the key is tied to. Miss Jones very nearly woke up, but didn't. Finally, Courtney managed to get the key off of her. The last key was finally found! But then, Courtney saw Kendal's pink teddy bear, Angel in the trash bin. Courtney grabbed it for her and slipped it into her back pack. She then quickly left before getting caught. Right when Courtney was outside in the hall, she ran to her new orphan friends and spread the news that she had found the fifth key.
            "You found it?!" whispered Bailey.
            "Yes!!"  Courtney whispered.
            "Yay!!" whispered all the orphans.
"You did it Courtney!!" whispered Marvin. "Come on! Let's put the keys in!"
So just like that, all of the orphans handed Courtney and Marvin their keys, placed them into the key holes, turned them, and the front door unlocked!!!
            "Were out!!" Kendal exclaimed.
"I'm so happy! Finally!" said Autumn.
"We did great guys!!" said Bailey.
"We sure did!" said Courtney. "And Kendal? I have a little surprise for you!"
Courtney pulled out Kendal's special pink teddy bear from her bag and gave it to her.
"Angel!!" Kendal yelled happily as she hugged her bear. "I thought I would never see you again! Thanks Courtney!" Kendal hugged Courtney.
"You're welcome sweetie," said Courtney. "Come on guys! Let's get to the police station!"
"But, what about those electric fences?"
"Oh yea...I forgot all about those."
"Well, my arm may be broken, but I'm not giving up and neither are you guys! There has to be another way." said Autumn.
"Your right," said Marvin. Marvin looked around. "Hey! I have an idea! We can climb up to the top of the roof, and then jump onto the building next to this one and then, BAM! Were out!"
"Are you crazy Marvin? That's so dangerous!" said Bailey rolling her eyes.
"I know, but it's the only way," said Marvin.
"He's right guys. We just have to find some sort of."
Before Courtney could finish, she noticed ladder pegs on the side of the orphanage.
"BINGO!" yelled Courtney.
The orphans ran to the ladder pegs and started climbing.
"Kendal, you go in front of me, so if you fall, I can catch you. But give me your teddy bear. I'll hold onto it while you climb."
"Thanks Courtney! You're so caring," said Kendal.
"Franny stay in my bag okay?"
Franny barked showing that she agreed.
Marvin climbed up with Autumn on his back since she was hurt.
The orphans climbed up twenty feet in the air until they reached the top. The tip of the roof is super thin.
"How are we going to get across? It's too thin." said Marvin.
"I don't know. All I know is that I'm not breaking another arm. Or leg," said Autumn,
"I guess we'll just have to take baby steps Autumn," said Courtney.
"But were so high up! If we fall, it's a long way down!"
"I know. But, if we take it slow, and don't look down, we just might survive this."
"So......ladies first?" Marvin asked with a fake smile.
The girls all crossed their arms and looked at Marvin all serious like. Marvin sighed.
            "Follow me," he said.
So Marvin led the way across the roof. Courtney, Bailey, and Autumn walked very carefully onto the other side. They almost slipped and fell and stumbled. Once they got across, they realized that Kendal hadn't followed them.
"Okay Kendal! Come on!" called Courtney.
Kendal had a look of being scared on her face.
"It's okay! Don't look down and take baby steps, said Courtney." Kendal started slowly across the roof.
"That's it! Come on! You're doing it!" said Courtney.
Kendal thought she was getting the hang of it, but then her foot slipped and she fell but grabbed onto the tip of the roof. Kendal was hanging from the roof and screaming.
            "Kendal!!" the orphans screamed.
            "Help me!!!" screamed Kendal.
"You're okay Kendal!! Just move to our side with your hands and well grab you!" Marvin called.
            "I can't!!"
"Just take it one hand at a time, like you're taking it one foot at a time" said Bailey.
Kendal did exactly what she was told and she made it across safely. Courtney then pulled her up into her arms.
"Great job Kendal!! Your safe now," said Courtney as she comforted her.
"We did it guys! Now let's jump over! It's close enough!!" said Marvin happily.
            "YOUR NOT GOING ANYWHERE!!!!"
            *GASP*
