This is very subjective. A collective movie review from my group of friends as we watched the movie Diary ng Panget in its premiere here in Visayas specifically here in Cebu.
My barkada is actually composed of 3 girls who actually read the entire DNP story and another 3 which I kinda belong (I'm a guy though) since I only read the 1st book of DNP who have little idea on how the story moves through and through. Anyway, that would make this reaction post a bit unbiased. Just a bit. LOL.
PS: English ako ng English kasi di ko malaman ang kaibahan ng ng at nang. PATAWARIN :)
Watched the movie Yesterday (April 2, 2014) at Ayala Mall Cebu 2:20 pm screening.
As expected it was full packed. The entire cinema was crawling with people of different genders but mostly girls who I know will be fangirling on James Reid and will be shipping on JADINE and will be cheering for Reid's abs. LEWL!
Before the movie started, there was this ad about the rules and proper etiquette to abide as the movie is undergoing but as soon as the DIARY-ish opening started, everyone was giggling already and excitement filled the air. People where anticipating so much from the movie. Have even friends who are FACEBOOKING as they watch the movie. The bottomline would be, it is a very much anticipated movie not only in Luzon but also in Visayas and maybe Mindanao. AWESOMENESS was supposed to reek from the movie.
Before the start of the show, I asked my friends on what they think about the trailer of DNP and these are their responses;

2. A new taste of Filipino film (parang critic tlaga sya. :3)
3. Experimental and Low budget ata (I also think so)
4. Gwapo si James Reid
5. Gwapo talaga si James Reid
So those are the responses I got from them. After watching the movie, all of them are verified except number 3. Di kami sure if low budget siya kasi nice kasi nang Willford University. I'll be critiquing it according to the elements of a novel made to a film.
PLOT, THEME, and SYMBOLISM
According to my friends who already read the story, it is indeed addictive. The plot is very AMAZING and CUTE but I would rather pick the one in wattpad. I like it more in the wattpad story. More intelligible than that single movie. We were actually inquisitive if the movie caters the 1st season of DNP or will it also take the 2nd season. It ended to be only DNP 1. Though it wasonly book 1, it seems that the 1st of DNP is just too compressed to be put into one movie. Many details were revised and many were omitted from the orginal story of Denny. I hate that they took some good parts. I understand that it was adapted to a movie and a movie has only limited time duration but since they took the challenge of film adaptation of the book, they should give justice to the original story. If a movie won't cover everything, then a second should be called. That is more proper than to take some fun parts and revising the original story. Sorry VIVA films but I hate the story was dissected. I like the ending part though. ;) RATE FOR PLOT IS 2/5.
SETTING
The setting was pretty much simple. That ma
de us think that the movie is a low budget one. Especially with Eya's Aunt's resto. It doesn't look classy at all. It looks too cheap for rich people to visit. The house of the Sandford should also be REALLYYYYYY big but it wasn't. It was narrated by Denny that the house of the Sandford should have a car to accompany those who wish to go to the house since their lawn is actually big. I think it is a nice gesture that the Sandfords are really TRULY AMAZINGLY RICH! The other settings were just fine. :) RATE FOR SETTING IS 3/5.
SOUND EFFECTS/ SPECTACLES
Love the thought that you guys made your own soundtrack from the cast. Very nice! Adds more relation to the song. The feels! Makes the kilig moments VERYYY KILIG! RATE FOR SOUND EFFECTS IS 5/5.! :D
CHARACTERS
Now, most of us don't know who the actors are at first glance. James Reid is the only exception since he was pretty much famous being the 2010 PBB Teen edition winner. The others are new in our eyes regardless of the network we preferred. That adds our suspicion that the movie is actually low budgeted. We tried to rank the characters according to their performance in the movie and we came up with this.
The Best portrayal of actors are:
1st. Eya
2nd. Cross
3rd. Lory
4th. Chad
That is the last we made. Nadine portrayed Eya beautifully. Chad was actually a disappointment for us. Chad was more lively in the book. The guy portraying Chad was not able to reach our expectation of the character of Chad. Considering that he is a newbie, that is understandable but WHY GIVE A NEWBIE FOR SUCH AMAZING FILM. That is the issue. -_- RATE FOR THE CHARACTERS IS 3/5.
This is a bit mean but I'll say it anyway. Most of us think that aside from the spectacular story line of Diary ng Panget, the one that draws the crowd best is James Reid. i must also agree since most people who reacted in the Cinema only do fangirling to JAMES and everytime he strips and shows his abs (GREAT IMPROVEMENT FROM A SKINNY PERSON IN PBB. I voted for him! heheh)
This movie review is just according to me and my group of friends. Just wanna share and maybe some people can verify if what we thought were true. Maybe you can debate and neglect the idea BUT again, THIS IS JUST OUR REVIEW. You are free to make your own. Anyway, so thankful for the DIARY NG PANGET the movie for making many people happy and gay and girly because of the movie. It is indeed nice to breathe fresh genre in the boring Filipino storyline. THUMBS UP! ;)
