Chapter 6
I screamed as the plane dipped hard to the left and started to fall towards the ocean. People were flying out of their seats, being thrown all over the plane. The oxygen mask had fallen and I tried to put mine on, but I was holding on to my seat to keep me from being thrown. I looked around for Andreas and my mouth fell open as I saw him running down the aisle sideways.
What the hell? He reached me just as the plane hit the water. My head cracked against the window and I blacked out.
There was water in my lungs again. It hurt to breath and a weird taste in my mouth was making me want to gag. I felt something crushing my ribs, but when I opened my mouth to cry out in pain, more water filled my lungs.
I started kicking trying to find the surface, but everything was black underneath the water. Wait. Why am I underwater? The memories flooded back and I was filled with terror. I remembered the plane crash and Andreas running towards me.
Suddenly I felt my head break through the surface. I coughed and looked around to see Andreas right beside me with his arm still wrapped around me. He must have been dragging me upwards.
Just as I had caught my breath something caught my foot taking me down. I felt my ankle snap as a piece of the plane caught it. Andreas grabbed me before I could be pulled too far down. He pulled whatever it was off of me and I used my good foot to push back towards the surface.
By the time I reached the surface my foot was already healed. This healing thing was fast. “Are you OK?”
I nodded unable to speak from the rawness in my throat. “Come on. We weren't too far from land.”
“You expect us to swim?” It hurt to speak.
“We have to. Come on don't you know the legend? Your mother was born from sea foam, so technically the sea is your grandfather.” I knew he was trying to be funny to make me feel better, but in reality I was sore and tired and swimming for miles to get to land did not seem fun at all.
I rolled my eyes and followed him. Surprisingly I wasn't getting fatigued and we seemed to be swimming at inhuman speeds. I looked back to see that I was making waves like a speed boat. I giggled and pushed myself fast completely overtaking Andreas.
When we finally reached the shore I was panting hard, but I was exhilarated. That was so cool. “So where are we anyways?”
“I think Portugal. We were still flying over the Atlantic when he crashed.” We sat on the shore for a moment catching our breath. I was still trying to come to terms with everything that had happened, and I wished that my mom were here to help me.
