It's Saturday now, the rest of the week was drama free, thankfully. Steven basically dislocated his knees every time he saw me so we wouldn't have that 'awkward' passing in the halls. Claire and her posse just glared at me when we saw each other in the hallway, I returned a glare.
It's currently 11:30am I am on my way to meet Mason at school. I am actually really excited to see where he is taking me, what the story is behind it, and just getting to know him better.
I get in my car and it's working perfectly, thank you wonderful car wizards! Even though it was probably like adding 2+2 to them. I drive off towards the school and am super excited for what's in store. I love surprises! Just kidding, I hate them.
I park in the school parking lot at 11:46am. Mason isn't here yet so I just go through my Instagram feed to see what's new and fresh. Honestly, Cole Sprouse is an amazing photographer he is always blessing my feed!
I hear an engine pull into the school parking lot and turn around to see Mason in his Jeep Wrangler coming in next to my Honda Civic. He parks and I hop out of my car and get into his.
"Hey," he says nonchalantly but with a little smile peeking through his lips.
"Hey," I say smiling, "so, where are we going?"
"I can't tell you that, you're going to have to wait until we get there." He says loving that I don't know where we're going.
"Fine, but can you at least tell me you're going to change the radio station?" I ask hopefully. I cannot stand this country trash.
"What do you mean? Country is my soul! It is almost impossible to not like Blake Shelton!" He says with an amused face. It's pretty good look for him, but he could probably make anything look good.
"Well, believe it or not, I don't like Blake Shelton, or any country singer for that matter. I'm more of a Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Killers kind of girl." By his face I can tell I've completely caught him off guard with my music choices. I don't really dress like a girl that listens to that type of music, but appearances always trick ya!
"By the end of this car ride you are going to wish you never said you don't like Blake Shelton. Just so you know you did this to yourself." He chuckles as he turns up the volume. I can't help but laugh with him. It doesn't matter if I have to listen to Blake Shelton the entire ride to wherever we're going. Because all that I will hear is his gorgeous laugh on replay.
We finally get to our destination. After 45 minutes of Blake Shelton my ears are about to burst. Don't get me wrong he isn't a bad singer just, not my cup of tea.
"Please tell me there was at least one Shelton song you liked," Mason asks his eyes hopeful, like he is a little kid hoping his mom will say yes to a sleepover. I almost feel bad that I will put out that light.
"I guess you're going to have to keep trying." I say smiling.
"But I just played his best stuff!!! Well that's kind of a lie because all his music is his best stuff, but seriously! None?"
"Not a single one."
"UGH! I'm not going to give up Hailey, you will like a Shelton song even if I end up dead because of it!"
I laugh at his determination to get me to like a Shelton song. It's REALLY adorable.
"Ok, enough about Shelton. Here we are, the Chicago memorial." His face softens and his eyes are less playful than they were a minute ago.
"Who's here?" I ask softly, remembering that his mom died but curious if anyone else is here.
"Everyone." The corners of his lips are slightly turned upside down, and eyes no longer sparkling. "My grandparents, my parents..." he pauses choking a bit. "Gosh, even my little sister," he sighs and a tear escapes his eyes. I intertwine my fingers with his to let him know that I'm here for him, and he squeezes, but doesn't let go.
We walk down to where his family is buried in complete silence. It breaks my heart that he doesn't have anyone, I can tell he is an amazing guy and doesn't deserve this. No one deserves to lose their family before they graduate high school.
We sit on the ground with our fingers no longer tangled. I am scared to ask him questions because I don't want to see him c--
"They were in a car accident 2 years ago. The anniversary of their death was on Wednesday." He says interrupting my thoughts and breaking the silence. That explains why he wasn't at school.
"Mason I--" he cuts me off
"Hailey you don't have to say anything."
"I know, but I want to." I grab his hand again "Mason I am really sorry that this happened and I know that we just met but if you need someone to talk to, you can talk to me. You know, I know the pain. Probably not as much because it was just my dad, but I know." I say sincerely. I really want him to know that I am here for him and will listen to whatever it is he has to say.
I just wonder why he only told me that his mom died, when it was his entire family.
"Thank you Hailey. And I only told you my mom died because it was our first time hanging out and I didn't want you to feel sorry for me. But when you told me about your dad I thought I should tell you about my family, that's why I've brought you here." I squeeze his hand. I like how vulnerable he is being with me, no guy has ever been this open with me before. It feels kind of nice.
I let go of his hand, realizing it was a mistake as soon as I let go. I take out my art things, and begin to draw
