the string that binds us

we're connected by a string
it's pure white
like the dress that i wore
i remember when you first touched me
it was cold and clear
like a river in my blood
you rushed through me
your lips were pink
mine were red from biting
but they blended perfectly
that string wrapped around our hands
bound them tight
the string is thicker now,
it's been smudged and dirtied
our choices dulled the white
it's nothing but stains now
but those stains can be good things
they remind me of where we were
where we are
and how we got here.
are you happy now?
are you proud of the stains you added?
did you smile when you frayed the edge,
pulled all the fibers out of the knot
and let your ice water flood into her veins?
did you even feel sad,
that somewhere far away,
my skin burned from heat exhaustion
and my body yearned for your love?
and yet
you're convinced the string won't snap
if we hold on a little tighter love.
