10. Alien 3

Fincher's debut is above all, a good attempt. It's got some interesting characters, some suspenseful sequences and some interesting plotlines. The directing seems competent if not slightly amateur. The issue with this film comes with the conception of the story and the odd tone. This film's story does not feel like a continuation of the Alien franchise. Instead, it feels like a pretty unique sci-fi movie. It also has a very out-of-place tone. The actors look like they take the story very seriously yet the film's set up seems outlandish and crazy. The movie also seems confused; this is likely due to the studio meddling that took place.

As far as an audition goes, it displays some of Fincher's talent, but I would be lying if I said it was anything but rather disappointing.

9. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Fincher has such a unique style. His films tend to be dark, precise and even horrifying. As humanly flawed as his characters are, his camera looks at them from an inhuman perspective. While this does give his film a strong presence and recognizability, it does limit his genre choices. Benjamin Button is as well directed as it can be, but it really was given the wrong director. With a rather sappy story on his hand, Fincher doesn't get to show off much of his incredible skills. The move and this script needed a spielberg. It doesn't need Fincher's precision. The movie really lacks the uniqueness of his other films, which isn't to say that it's bad. After all, the ending was downright tear inducing, and the direction is still excellent. Benjamin Button is simply not as memorable as Fincher's other films.
