2017 is rapidly coming to close. It is therefore time for me to release my characteristically untimely list. Indeed, I cannot help the fact that this list is underdeveloped. Most of the best films of the year like The Disaster Artist, The Darkest Hour, Call Me By Your Name, The Big Sick, Ladybird, The Post and The Florida Project have all yet to be released in my country. Still, I genuinely adore all the films I've placed on this list. And in fact, I feel that my top 5 films stand to compete against all those other acclaimed films I haven't seen.
Once again, subjectivity's the name of the game. This is not a ranking of the best movies, it is the ranking of my favorite films.
Honorable Mentions:
HM. Wind River
This was one of my most anticipated films of the year, and it delivered most of what it promised. One segment towards the end of the film I thought broke the flow of the movie a bit. A greater level of depth and a deeper layer of story and relationship would've maybe raised this film to greatness. For now however, it is an incredibly suspenseful movie, perhaps the most suspenseful one of the year. It is a subtle character study with Oscar level acting, one that brings attention to a real-life social issue.
HM. Spider-man Homecoming
This movie is affected by the Spider--man fatigue and the marvel fatigue. Without these two things, one could easily regard it as one of the best spider-man movies yet. It is light, fun but also motivated. Marvel may have rested on its laurel in terms of story and tone but its characters remain its strongest point. This is a damn good spider-man movie and I wanna see more of it.
HM. War for the Planet of the Apes
Yeah, I'm not going to lie. My expectation kinda betrayed me on this one. This one would really have hit me if I didn't have such a damn high expectation. I'm not going to blame anyone for it, it's a great ending to a great trilogy. It's my fault I don't feel it as much.
HM. Get Out
I really think this is an excellent start to Jordan Peele's career as a serious filmmaker. We've always seen how incredible well-directed and well-produced those Key and Peele videos were. Seeing that level of proficiency in action is just incredible. This is a really enjoyable thriller with a twisted concept backing it up. I'm looking forward to even greater things for Jordan Peele.
HM. Wonder Woman
The sad thing for me is, this movie could've made so high on the list if it didn't betray itself by the end. To this day I cannot believe the stark difference in quality between the ending of this film and the rest of it. The ending of the movie was for the most part a low-bar marvel/DC action CGI fest. The rest of the film felt like a classic comic book movie mixed with an old-school Disney princess story - but a really great one. The film itself is so well written and paced, it is inhuman. The directing was so smooth and so elegant. Thee film has an absolutely jaw-dropping moment just a bit before its third act. I seriously cannot praise the rest of this movie enough...
