I sighed, looking out the window. Alone, all alone on that train. I didn't even know why I was there... how I got there actually. Magic wasn't supposed to exist, and even if it did I wasn't supposed to have it! Yeah, I know what you're thinking. You're thinking that I'm a total weirdo because I don't think it's cool that I'm a witch. But in normal school, I was the invisalble girl that no one noticed. That girl that sat alone at lunch but never really minds, that was me and I loved every moment of it. Now I was gone and that girl wouldn't exist at my school.
The worst part was that I planned to see what it was like to have actual friends... to know what that feels like! I was going to make my new start here but it seems like everyone has the same plans for me... I'll be isolated until the end of my days I guess. No one even knew my name here... that's just great...
A woman came by with a cart of food but I just ignored her, eventually telling her I wasn't hungy and she moved on. Eventually, after tiring of the window senery, I pulled out my novel and began to read, "Well hello, there," I heard coming from the direction of the door. I looked up to see a girl that looked about the same age as me, "Do you mind if I sit here?"
"No, of course not go right ahead..."
"Elise, Elise Sage," she said, extending her small hands, "First year."
"Annabelle Dessen," I said shaking her hand, "And I'm a first year as well."
"Have you done much research on Hogwarts?" she asked me. I shook my head, really wishing I had...
"Well I've heard of the different houses, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, Huffelpuff, and Gryffindoor," she explained the meaning of each one, already decided that she'd be going to Ravenclaw, I expected that for myself also.
"So, are you a Half Blood like me?" she asked. I gave her a blank stare and hoped she would explain, and so she did, "A Muggle born is someone that somehow developed a knack for magic, yet wasn't born into a magic family. While not rare some are frowned upon... A Half Blood like myself has a wizard parent and a Muggle parent. And a so called Pure blood is someone who has an all magic family..." she said, trailing off at the end for no apparent reason.
"Oh, then I'm a Muggle born I guess..." I said looking at my feet, "I don't truly know... my parents died when I was five years old, in a car crash... I was in the car, I'm lucky I survived... I really don't remember anything about them except for their faces which I see in pictures..." I said, taking a sudden intrest in the sleeve of my robes.
"Oh, I'm sorry, I shouldn't have asked..." she said gently patting my arm.
"No, you had every right to be curious," I said forcing a smile, "Now, how long is this train ride supposed to last?" I aksed her.
"Well, I'd say we're about three quarters of the way there," she said with a wide smile, "I can't wait!"
"I can, I don't really think this is all it's made out to be, I mean, what if they only teach us things that will do bad? Or even if they don't, what if I'm no good?" I said frowning at the wand box in the seat across from me.
"Well, in all of the research I've done I think I would've known if they taught dark magic here and I wouldn't have come in the first place. And I've heard of some of the greatest witches and wizards coming from Muggle families! I'm sure you'll be fine," she exclaimed with that ever-present smile.
"Oh... so do you have any brothers or sisters?" I asked her.
"Yes, I have twelve including myself. Only half of us ended up with the magic gene, though. It's rather strange actually..." she said trailing off and looking out the window.
"Oh wow! I don't think I could live with eleven other kids in the house!" I exclaimed with slight laughter in my voice.
"It's quite noisy." she said, returning the laughter and smile. We talked the whole rest of the way there. I was really happy that I'd found someone to talk to, I don't think I could've gone seven years in the biggest school I'd ever seen without a friend. That would be unbearable!
"WE'RE HERE!" she shouted as soon as the school came into clear view. My stomach got butterflies and I flew out of my seat to see out the window. I imagined it looking more like a school, this was a castle!
"It's beautiftl, Elise!" I sighed, watching the sparkling lights dance on the lake. Smiling at everything out there I suddenly couldn't wait for my new year to begin! I looked at Elise and laughed.
"Annabelle, what could possibly be going on in your head making you laugh!?" she asked me, giggling herself.
"This is so perfect!" I screamed, getting odd looks from some fifth years in the compartment next to us.
"Don't be so loud," she said just as loud. I smiled and gave her a high five. We walked out of the train amd there was a man standing there yelling about first years come to him. So we followed the direction of his voice.
That was the biggest man I'd ever seen! Holy crap! He had to be eight feet! After I had gawked at him for who knows how long Elise made sure I was following him as he began to walk. He led us to a dock with some boats. I climbed in to the boat. As I was lifting my left foot to step into the boat, I lost my balance and started heading towards the water. Bracing myself for the cold and holding my breath I suddenly felt someone's hands on me, guiding my body towards the boat. I opened my eyes to see a boy with fiery red hair and brown eyes that seemed to go on forever.
He smiled at me and I attempted to hold back a blush as I smiled back. Another boy who looked almost just like him, I'd assumed to be his twin, laughed as I turned away, sitting down in the boat and hoping that he wasn't looking at me from his boat.
"Do you like him?" Elise asked me, wiggling her eyebrows.
I giggled, "He's kinda cute... he seems nice," I said looking at the bottom of the boat.
"Oh wow... I kinda like his brother," she admited with a smile and blush. We high fived then started getting ready to get off of the boat. I got off (safely this time) then blushed when I realized that he was right behind me. I tried to act casual but Elise killed it with 'the look'. We're all familliar with 'the look'. That smiley, giggley, guess-who's-behind-you look that your friends give you whenever your crush is near.
The I felt a tap on my shoulder, taking a breath I turned around, "My name's George by the way, George Weasley," he said holding out a hand.
"Annabelle," I said taking his hand, "Annabelle Dessen."
