(6 months)
"Pete, I can't." Sonny tried to explain to his boyfriend of six months.
"Why? Why can't you?" Pete begin to raise his voice. Pete never raised his voice at Sonny. Never.
Sonny began to flinch back, he hated when people yelled.
"B-Because... yaknow Navi don't like you and he-he'll be mad... please don't be mad at me." Sonny felt tears stung his eyes, remembering where he came from. Where his cousin rescued him from. His father... it made Sonny shudder just to think of that man.
Pete immediately felt guilty "Baby, I'm so sorry I didn't mean to yell please don't cry." he hugged the younger boy closer, slightly swaying them back and forth. Sonny put his face in Pete's chest, breathing in the scent of cigarettes and spray paint.
"We'll tell 'im in the mornin' I p-promise." Sonny said quietly.
"Only if you want to." Pete replied gently.
"I do... but you gotta sorta stay up in my room or somethin' cuz he gets mad when you're in the bodega..."
"Okay my love." Pete agreed "whatever you want, that's what I want." Pete placed a soft kiss on the top of Sonny's head.

The next morning, Sonny woke up next to Pete. They were still laying out on the fire escape, they must've fallen asleep there. He reached his hand into Pete's pocket, pulling out his pack of cigarettes and a lighter. Sonny wasn't a smoker, but he would have one or two when he was approaching a stressful situation. Pete hated it when Sonny did it, even though he was addicted and had been since he was 14, he wanted better for his angel.
Sonny lit the cigarette, taking a long drag from it, blowing the smoke out into the morning air. Pete woke up when his boyfriend had gotten half way through one of his cigarettes.
"Baby!" Pete scolded.
"I'm stressed." Sonny whined "scared to tell Usnavi and all that..."
"No." Pete insisted, plucking the cigarette out of Sonny's mouth, finishing it off before throwing it from where they sat. "It's bad for you, angel." Pete kissed Sonny's nose.
"You do it!"
"Yeah but I'm a piece a' shit. Cmon, lets go get ready." He stood up, pulling Sonny up with him and through the window of his bedroom.
"You're not a piece of shit." Sonny said matter of factly "but if you were, you'd be my piece of shit."
Pete laughed, grabbing a black tank top and dark jeans from the bottom drawer of Sonny's dresser where he kept all of his things. He threw the clothes on, sitting down on the bed and watching Sonny get dressed.
"You're so beautiful," Pete sighed when Sonny had dressed from the waist down, gym shorts, as always.
Sonny blushed a deep red "Shut up."
"I love you so much." Pete smiled.
"I love you too, doof," Sonny giggled, pulling on a black tank top that had a puppy on it. Pete had given it to him for their five month anniversary. "here I go," Sonny sighed "wish me luck."
Before Sonny could walk out the door, Pete pulled the back of his shirt, swiftly turning him around and pressing his lips firmly to his boyfriend's. "Good luck." he said, watching Sonny leave.
--------
"Hey Navi?" Sonny stuttered.
"What's up cuz?" Usnavi turned around, throwing his rag over his shoulder.
"I gotta tell you somethin' and y'cant freak out, okay?"
"Okay?"
"I've been in a... sorta serious... r-relationship for like... six months now."
"Aw, Sonny that's cute! Why would I be mad? Who's the lucky lady?"
"That's the thing...."
"What? It's not Nessa is it? Because I totally called dibs before you were even conceived!" Usnavi said, jokingly.
"It'sPete." Sonny blurted.
"What?" Usnavi's eyes got wide.
"Pete. Graffiti Pete."
Usnavi didn't talk, which gave Sonny a chance to overthink. "And I know you don't like him because he's a punk or whatever but he makes me really really happy and I know he's 18 and all that so he's like too old for me or whatever but I love him and we don't need your approval because we have each other." Sonny spoke extremely fast when he was worried someone would be mad at him, a habit he had developed long before he met Usnavi.
"Cuz," Usnavi took a deep inhale "is he good to you?"
Sonny nodded.
"And you're being safe when you... yaknow.. do stuff?"
Sonny nodded.
"And you're REALLY sure you love him?"
Sonny nodded.
"Then there's nothing I can do about it. I still love you." Usnavi shrugged, pulling his cousin in for a hug. Sonny bolted toward the stairs, screaming up them.
"Babe he's chill!!!"
Pete bounced down the stairs, a grin on his face. Usnavi glared.
"This doesn't mean you get to come in my store. Shoo! Scram! Get outta here!" Pete rolled his eyes, leaving the store.
"You're a dick." Sonny glared at his cousin.
Usnavi shrugged.
