"Well then why don't we take a break?!" Sonny felt like his vocal chords were ripping in half at the magnitude of his voice.
"What? Like break up, but you're too chicken to break up with me!!!" Pete yelled back.
"If you really want that!!!" Sonny yelled before running into the bodega and locking the door. He watched Pete through the glass doors as he walked away to god knows where. Not only did Sonny just break up with him, he left him homeless.
---
Usnavi knocked gently on his younger cousin's bedroom door.
"Hey, kid... what's going on? You haven't come out in 2 days. Are you even there?" He gently pushed the door open to reveal his cousin, buried in blankets and dirty clothes.
"Get out." Sonny muttered from somewhere under all of it.
"Cuz, what's going on?"
"None of your business. Get. Out."
"Do ya want me to call Nina? She's home for the week."
Sonny let a small smile cross his face "That would be nice..." Nina was his best friend. And he hadn't seen her since the summer when she left for college. Usnavi nodded, leaving the room.
---
Nina arrived about an hour later, crawling through the window. For some reason though, this made Sonny start crying a bit harder than he already was.
"Hey, Son'" Nina frowned at her best friend "what's goin' on? I've been home for two days and you haven't been over."
Sonny sat up. Nina did all that she could to not gasp. His hair was matted; his eyes were so red and swollen that it looked like he might have an infection. But the worst thing, by far, was his overall expression. Sonny looked like everything that ever mattered had been torn away from him right in front of his face.
"Oh, sweetheart." Nina exhaled, sitting on the bed next to Sonny and pulling him into a tight embrace. This caused Sonny to cry harder into Nina's shoulder.
"We b-broke up..." He stuttered.
---
Sonny woke up the next morning next to Nina, they fell asleep watching movies. He went out to the fire escape like he did every morning, only to find Pete sitting there, waiting for him with a bouquet of flowers.
"Sonny I'm so sorry, would you-" Sonny smiled wide, cutting Pete off with a gentle kiss.
"I love you so much."
"I'm so sorry, angel, I promise that is never ever going to happen again. We will always be together."
