“Nicholson! Email your recent piece to me! I need it now!” barked the editor, Daniel, as he sped past my desk at a high pace.
“Yes, sir!” I saluted playfully, before quickly sending my report off to Daniel via email.
“Lunch break’s almost over and you haven’t eaten a bite!” my friend, Priscilla, chided.
“I’m a busy woman, Prissy! Please! I have no time for chitchatting! Daniel’s on a roll!” I exclaimed.
Priscilla held out a sandwich, “please take it! My mum will scold me if I don’t finish it!”
Although I knew it was just a way to get me eat that sandwich, I gave in and snatched that sandwich from Priscilla’s hand, wolfing it down in a matter of seconds.
“Anne! Jade Deslin on line 1!” the secretary called out.
“Thanks, Maria!” I replied before picking up the phone on my desk. “Hey Jade.”
“Oh I can finally hear Anne’s voice! I tried you on your cell but you didn’t pick up! Anyway I haven’t seen you walk through those cafeteria doors. What’s up?”
“Surprised you even noticed! How’s Brittany?” I laughed.
“Anne, stop it. So where were you? Or where are you?” Jade shot back.
“Jade, I’m working! Please don’t disturb me! I have a piece due tomorrow and I’m not even halfway through!” I ranted.
“See Anne, this is why I didn’t want you to join the newspaper. You just hang out with you newspaper friends now!” Jade whined.
I sighed, “Jade I’m really busy. Can we talk later? Please?” I asked.
“Alright, fine.” She said reluctantly.
“Thank you!” I said appreciatively.
The school bell rang and I was finally let out of class for lunch befor heading back to the newspaper room to continue my job. As I lined up for my food, I felt a slight buzz from my pocket. Whipping out my cell phone, I saw a new message from Jade: Meet me by the steps just outside school doors. NOW. PLEASE?
Leaving the queue, I heaved a sigh and walked out of the cafeteria and saw Jade eating a sandwich. She turned to face me, a relaxed look and waved slightly. I smiled and took a seat beside her. “What’s up?”
Jade shook her head, “we were supposed to talk.”
“I-I figured it would be over the phone.” I coughed.
“I just missed you, I guess. We’re not as closed as we used to be, we have new friends, I feel as if now we’re just, friends.”
“What? Jade, that’s absolutely crazy! Remember you told me we’ll always be best friends? Now, weren’t we supposed to hang out after school?” I smiled.
“Yeah. It’s the only day you weren’t staying until late. Honestly, Saffy misses you!” Jade giggled.
“Oh my gosh! That teenager? Are you serious?” I opened my eyes wide in disbelief.
Jade nodded enthusiastically. “She’s totally looking forward to seeing you today- though she may not show it.”
I laughed, “right, right.” I patted her knee, “so, I’ll meet you after school, kay?”
“Yeah, see ya later!” Jade sang as I walked back into the school.
Maria knocked on the classroom door politely, “Excuse me, but may I please see Anne Nicholson?”
