Jade, arm slung around me, walked confidently towards the newspaper office. "You know, I'm actually excited for this! I mean, sure, i loved being on the student committee, but it's great that i can spend more time with you!"
I flinched when she said she loved being on the student committee, but threw her a warm and encouraging smile anyways, "me too, I'm certain you'll get the position!"
I knocked on Daniel's office door lightly before pushing it open. He sat on his chair, engrossed in whatever he was doing on his computer. I cleared my throat loudly to get his attention. True enough, he looked up, startled. "Ah, Nicholson. What can i do for you?"
I shot him a look, "Jade's here for the interview."
He still had a puzzled look on his face.
I sighed heavily, "you know, i told you about it this afternoon and you agreed and-"
"Oh yes! I remember!" Daniel exclaimed. I rolled my eyes and nodded.
"Yay, you have a memory!" i said sarcastically.
He narrowed his eyes at me before turning to Jade, flashing her a small smile. "And you are?"
Jade stepped forward and held out her hand, "Jade, Jade Deslin."
Daniel gladly shook her hand, "Nice to meet you, Jade!" He turned to me, "I like her already!" he chuckled.
"Well i guess, she doesn't need to go through the interview then!" I joked.
"Nah uh!" Daniel shook his index finger.
Jade was giggling uncontrollably, "you two are so cute together, it's hilarious!"
I felt my face heat up as i glared at her. "That's disgusting." I cringed my face.
Jade stuck her tongue out playfully at me.
"Okay, okay. I have work to do, let's interview you and see if you're good for the position, yeah?" Daniel interrupted.
Jade nodded in agreement, and she took a seat on the chair opposite Daniel. She placed both her hands on her lap, "so..."
Daniel cleared his throat at me and shot me a look.
"What?" I said, irritated.
"I'd appreciate it if you leave, you are a major distraction." Daniel said sternly.
I demanded, "what do you mean a maj-"
"See what i mean? You're too...noisy. Go out, please!"
I gave Jade a thumbs-up before sulking and stomping out of the room, slamming the door behind me but not before i heard Daniel's amused chuckle.
Finally, the door clicked open, and i heard Daniel's voice. "Thanks for coming in today, Jade. I'll let you know of my decision by tomorrow."
"No, thank you! I really hope i get this position, i really do want it!" Jade replied enthusiastically.
They exchanged goodbyes and Daniel went back into his office while Jade strolled out, grinning like a Cheshire cat.
"So..." i drawled, "how'd it go?"
Jade suddenly reached over and gave me a bear-hug. 'Oh Anne! Thank you so much for getting me this interview! It was great and really friendly. Daniel must be an awesome person to work with! I really really hope i get this!"
I laughed at her energy, "I wouldn't say he's awesome, but he's okay. And it is my job to help you, i mean, what are friends for?"
Jade grinned at me.
"Aww, won't you look at that. They're so sweet together, it's a shame they're losers." Brittany's awful voice was heard as she pouted her face in fake sympathy.
I stepped forward defensively, "what do you want, Brittany?" I spat.
She sashayed around me, "oh nothing. You have such a strong personality, we could totally use you on the student committee. Isn't that right, girls?"
The group of girls behind her nodded quickly.
My shock was soon replaced with anger. I glared at Brittany, "I'd rather die than be anywhere with you, Brittany Scott. You guys can rot without me or Jade because we'll never, and i repeat, never, want to be associated with you in any way."
Brittany folded her arms, agitated. "You're gonna wish you hadn't said that, dear Anne. I have the power to make your life a living hell." She said such cruel words in her high-pitched, sugar-coated voice which made me feel like puking.
I rolled my eyes, looking nonchalant, "You call that a threat?" I scoffed. "It already is, anyway. So good luck with that."
Brittany flipped her hair, "fine, your words, not mine. Let's go girls." and with that, she strutted away, her posse following behind like obedient puppies.
Jade stood rooted to the ground, her face ashen.
"Jade are you okay?" I held her arm, concerned.
She looked me straight in the eye, "Anne. Why would you do that? You know Brittany does have the power to make your life a living hell. You know that a well as i do."
I sighed, "I know, but someone has to stand up to that evil little conceited-"
Jade cleared her throat to stop me from swearing. I smiled slightly at her, "thanks."
"But you're right. Someone should stand up to her." Jade agreed strongly.
I put my arm around her, "Yeah. But whatever it is, we'll get through it together."
Jade held out her pinky, "promise?"
I wrapped my pinky around her's, "I promise."
