“Jade!” I called out, “and Brittany.” I felt a pang of disappointment when I saw Jade arm in arm with Brittany.

“Hey, Anne!” Jade exclaimed and waved enthusiastically.

“Anne Nicholson. Well, isn’t it just too bad you aren’t on the student committee? All that time away from your best friend must be unbearable. Don’t worry, I’ll keep her company!” Brittany snarled, carrying a mischievous grin on her face.

I took a deep breath and counted to ten to calm myself, “Yeah, I sure am very grateful for that.”

Jade laughed, “Oh Anne, Brit’s right! If not for her, I’d be stomping around all grumpy and lonely!”

“That’s it. I can’t take this anymore.” I spun around and left for the newspaper room, where I figured I would find privacy.

“Anne?” I heard Jade call, followed by the sickly voice I detested, “Leave her, she’s having a rough time.”

Rough time? Brittany Scott is stealing my best friend away! I could feel the heat rising up in me, and my attempt to push it back down was to no avail.

I bolted to the the newspaper room without thinking and hid under my desk.

“Nicholson, why aren’t you eating lunch?” Daniel asked when he saw me crouched under my desk.

“Please leave me alone.” I muttered

“Are you crying?” Daniel bent down.

I quickly shoved the tissue box behind my back and wiped my eyes with the back of my hand, “no, I’m not, Go away, please.”

Daniel chuckled, “hehe, you are!”

“Thanks so much for comforting me,” I mumbled sarcastically.

“Anytime, Nicholson. By the way, you have a paper due soon, unless you change your mind about the promotion.”

“No thanks, Daniel. I’ve made up my mind.” I said firmly.

“Well, I can’t force you,” he sighed, “but if, somehow, you do change your mind, let me know.”

“Yeah, yeah, whatever.” I muttered.

Daniel left soon after and I was alone in the newspaper room, just as I wanted. I started thinking: Why don’t I want the promotion? I mean, I can still write pieces, maybe even get the chance to edit a few, and I have time to spare now that Jade has Brittany…Plus, it could be fun, maybe I should go for it. Yeah, it’s starting to sound pretty good, I’m going to do it. It’s time for change.

I burst out of the room, “Daniel! Daniel!”

Daniel, who was making his way up the stairs, turned, with a puzzled look on his face, “What’s up?”

“I’ll do it.” I smiled.

“The promotion? But you were so fixated on staying where you are just now!” he laughed.

“Things change”, I mumbled, “just like how they could change again!”

“No, no, no!” Daniel quickly said, “please don’t change your mind, I’ve been looking for someone to fill this position for ages. I was hoping you’d come to your senses.”

I folded my arms, “On one condition.”

“Name it.” Daniel groaned.

“I’m not just your assistant, I get to write pieces?”

“Absolutely, madam!” Daniel nodded.

“Good.” And with that, I walked away.
