“Daniel! Wait up!” I called, rushing to catch him.
Daniel groaned, “If you’re here to back out, I’m not listening.”
I rolled my eyes, “No, it’s not that. Look, now I’m not one of the journalists anymore, correct?” Daniel nodded, frowning slightly.
“So I’m assuming my spot’s not filled yet. Okay, so I know someone perfect for the job. She’s an incredible writer and everything!”
Daniel folded his arms, “Hmm, I do need someone to fill in for you. Who is this person? I guess I’ll interview her, tell her to meet me in my office today after school if possible. Oh, remember you accepted the position? You’ve gotta plan everything.” Daniel winked.
This time it was my turn to groan, “Evil, evil, evil!”
“Not my problem, Nicholson. See ya later.”
Ring! The last class of before lunch ended. I caught with Jade at her locker. “How are you holding up?”
“I’m ok, I guess. Some of the committee believe me, but others are so wrapped up in Brittany’s world. Gosh, what power!” Jade replied.
“Well, until everyone finds out the truth, I’ve got you a job at the newspaper!” I told her.
“Oh Anne! You’re the best!” Jade hugged me.
“Well, you have am interview today after school, but I’ll make sure you’ll get it. But I’m sure you can handle that on your own!” I laughed.
Jade grinned, “Thank you!”
Brittany and the student committee strode past us; I threw Brittany my most deadly glare. Brittany flipped her hair and chuckled. “Oh, Jade. Looks like you’re a loser again. Well that’s too bad. If only you hadn’t screwed up so much!”
I could feel anger rising up in me and my heart ricocheted against my chest. “You’re a bully, Brittany! No, I got a better word to describe you. Bitch!” I screamed, totally losing my temper.
I stomped off in a huff, pulling Jade along with me. I ran into one of the bathroom stalls and floodgates opened and my tears spilled out. I was so stupid to do that.
“Anne?” Jade knocked on the door, only to find that it had been left unlocked.
“Jade, I’m sorry. I lost my temper so bad! I’ll never forgive myself!” I wailed.
Jade rubbed my back, “Anne, that was wonderful. You were so brave, standing up for me like that. I can never thank you enough!”
I wiped my tears with the back of my hand, “Really? You’re not mad?”
“Why would I be?” Jade smiled, “now let’s get you cleaned up. I’ve got a interview to get to!”
“How about-“
“Don’t worry; I packed lunch from home today. We’ll eat it somewhere private, okay?”
I nodded solemnly, managing just a tiny smile. I missed Jade being my best friend. I couldn’t believe I had let her slip through my fingers.
