Chapter 2 - Mustaches

I was just about to leave the house, when I suddenly got a text. It's probably no surprise that this text was from James.

"Hey do you think we should go in disguise?"

I chuckled a bit. I had known that James is very often recognized in the streets, and he often joked about getting disguises for the two of us.

"Sure, seems like fun! What did you have in mind?" I replied.

"I have fake mustaches, do you think that'll work?"

Silly James. Of course it would work. We would totally be unrecognizable.

I sent a message that I was on my way, kissed Ari goodbye (he was not happy about it) and promised I would get something nice for him if he waited patiently and refrained from pooping my room under.

Naturally he agreed, but I know full well that this promise would be one-sided.

Some time passed, and I found myself standing in front of James's front door. I knocked, and almost lost it when I saw what was behind it.

"Surprise!"

Several people had gathered behind the doorstep, all with party hats on and colorful balloons in their hands. In the center of the bunch was James, along with his dogs and his family next to him. As promised, he was wearing a fake mustache above his giant smile.

"Oh my god guys, you almost scared me to death!" I exclaimed, still recovering from the initial shock.

"I'm sorry, I just had to. Can't miss out on Jaiden's scared reaction on this special day, can we?"

"Why do you always do this to me?"

"Aww c'mon, just admit that you were at least a bit pleasantly surprised," James teased.

Once inside, I greeted his parents, his dogs and his twin sister, Faith. They are quite familiar with me now, as I visited James numerous times lately.

He led me to the kitchen, where a huge cake was sitting on the table. Next to it were two enormous jars of sprinkles.

Oh no.

James saw my surprise, as he began to explain, "Well, I thought we could pass on the tradition. I'm sorry I couldn't get 2 million of them. I used most of it in my recent video."

Then he leaned in, our heads just centimeters apart. I felt my heart rate quicken whilst trying not to panic.

He whispered, "Actually, I used only 2.5 million sprinkles in that video. I saved the other sprinkles just for you." He pulled away and gave me a massive wink.

I laughed nervously as I tried to avoid his gaze. Hopefully he didn't notice my little panic attack. But he seemed oblivious to my actions and tried to open the first jar of sprinkles.

"Damn, these things are shut tight," he mumbled, rattling the jar in frustation.

I smiled and opened the jar itself. It wasn't shut that tight at all.

"Yeah I did most of the work already," he joked.

Well, he certainly isn't the strongest guy. And he's by far not the buffest. I know that many girls are after looks and hot bodies, but I had promised myself that I would only judge on someone's personality, not on someone's looks.

That's kind of difficult with James's cute face though.

I shook the thought out of my head immediately. James is just a friend, I told myself.

But when I thought that, James looked up from his second jar, his eyes fixated on me.

I looked away, pretending I didn't see him. I always had difficulty with eye contact, even with my best friends. Suddenly the room felt a lot warmer.

His gaze lingered for a while, then he focused on the jar once again.

Besides, I might potentially make it awkward between us if he didn't like me back, which would be pretty likely.  It's best if I just ignore my thoughts for now, I thought to myself.

James's voice woke me up to reality.

"So, are you ready for some sprinkles?"

My human has finally left the household. She said she'll be gone for a while, so it's the perfect time for my ultra secret mission. I flew out of my metal confinement, pooping on the artificial brown grass on the way. I wasn't planning to uphold my part of the bargain anyway.

I flew towards the area where humans prepared their food, where no one seemed to be residing at that moment. On the counter I saw my target: a box with blueberries.

Perfect.
