She tried in vain to keep her excitement to herself, but as she began bouncing on the soles of her feet, she found that was an impossible task.
Hanna's enthusiasm to finally meet Team U.S.A. officially died down when she actually had to do it.
She would have never thought that being surrounded by all these people could be lonelier than when you're by yourself. That you can be in a huge crowd, but if you don't feel like you can trust anyone or talk to anybody, you feel like you're really alone.
She had stuck around with Charlie and Jesse and talked to them for the most part - trying to avoid any conversation with Adam but that wasn't hard considering he was doing the same. Was she really that bad of a kisser? She kept asking herself that same question.
As Ackerman blabbed on about some story that she wasn't following she sat back on her hands, eyes on the starry night sky. It was so easy to fall into it, get lost among the twinkling lights.
"Odd time to ask a question, yes?" Goldberg directed towards Hanna and she shrugged causing him to continue. "But we are probably all wondering this so I'm just gonna ask it. Why did you propose to cake-eater over hear?"
A blush danced across her cheeks in an embarrassing pattern and she laughed as to stall and try to find the words to say. "I'm a new Varsity player, all new players have to participate in a rush week. Almost like hazing. It's tradition."
No one said anything besides their own versions of realizations, it was a few moments before Hanna spoke up again. "It sucks but it's tradition and everyone else had to do it."
"I wish we had traditions like that," Guy stated and his statement was almost immediately shut down by Connie.
"Why? Hazing sounds like a terrible idea. I think people could get hurt."
"Well Hanna hasn't gotten hurt!" He shot back and all Hanna could think about was that if she wouldn't have gotten that stupid proposal dare she would've never kissed Adam and he wouldn't be ignoring her.
"Right Hanna?" He asked her for confirmation and she shook her head.
"I wouldn't say that I got hurt physically but mentally this is exhausting," she joke. "Constantly having to do what you're told in fear that you may end up washing the whole teams laundry. It gets tiring." She admitted. Ackerman obnoxiously laughed, sending everyone into their own fits of laughter, until it wasn't funny anymore.
For a second everyone was in silence before they broke off into their own conversations. Instantly feeling left out Charlie noticed and nudged her shoulder causing her to look at him. "I meant it when I said you played well tonight. Seriously, I may have underestimated you," he laughed.
She shot him a smile "I'm glad to see I've exceeded your expectations, Charlie." Looking down to her fingers that were toying with the zipper on her jacket she continued. "I hope I get to see you play too, but I've set my expectations pretty high so you better live up to them," she joked and he looked at the concrete smiling.
"Oh boy, I don't think I can," he replied half jokingly and half not "how highs the bar set?"
"Pretty high," she smiles even wider meeting his gaze and he laughs slightly.
"I better get practicing then."
Some butterflies erupted in Hanna's stomach. A weird pounding in her head made her feel light enough to float away. How could it be that every time she had a conversation with Charlie, she had the brightest smile, grinning ear to ear? It almost wasn't fair that she didn't make him smile that big.
