Edward loved books, and everyone knew this. Wether it was a western fantasy to the history of jazz, he loved books. Right before bed every night, someone would bring him into the library and his emerald green eyes would light up. To say it wasn't his favourite time, would be the biggest lie on this planet. So tonight was no different.
As Edward was set down on the floor, he ran over to the collection of books Carlisle has specificity created for him. Like always his eyes lit up as bright as the night sky on the Fourth of July. He looked up, down, left, and right until he found the perfect book. He ran back to Jasper, who was known best for his story teller voice and knowing how to lure Edward to sleep, and reached up handing him the book.
"Are you sure about this one Edward?"
He asked quizzically. It wasn't that he was against it, but typically Edward chose western stories to folktales. To be frank those were Jaspers favorite, however it's Edward's choice not his. When he looked down at the nodding little boy, he shrugged. "As you wish," he stated matter of factly.
Jasper picked up the little boy and placed him on his hip and walked across the hall to Edward's room. Once there he sat down and smiled at the tyke on his lap and began to read.
"Once upon a time, there was a fair maiden by the name of Snow White," he began. As he continued to read, he smiled down at Edward watching him yawn every so often until he saw him finally doze off. He got up and placed Edward in the crib until a faint whisper caught his attention.
"Bubba?"
"Yes Edward?"
"Can I be a princess too?"
"Of course you can darling. You can be whatever you want," Jasper smiled.
"Even if I'm a boy?"'
"Even if you're a boy. Now it's time to go to sleep. I love you Edward."
"I love you too, Bubba," and with that Edward was out. For the next two weeks Edward continued to request every princess book he found, and as this occurred he began to play more with his dollies instead with his soldiers. Until one day, the family went out to go grab groceries. A little old couple had looked over at the young boy as the family looked at the canned foods.
"Why do you have dolly, boy? Don't you know those are for girls?" said the old man. This however caught the attention of Esme. She went over to where her youngest sat in the buggy and looked at the couple.
"Pardon me, but please don't talk to my son like that," she stated kindly.
"Son? He's acting like a girl, he is. Listen real boys play with soldiers, not dollies. In my day, he'd been the laughing stock of the town," the man replied.
"Well this isn't your day. In fact this a new day and if you don't like that my son is playing with a toy, then you can leave," she stated matter of factly.
"It's people like you ruining this country. Your turning boys into sissies," he spat back.
"No sir, it's individuals like you who refuse to allow others to be happy," and with that the man huffed and left. His wife, however, stayed and came up to Esme, "I'm sorry about my husband. I'm trying to make him stop, but he refuses. You have a beautiful little boy and I hope he didn't ruin your day." With that she left as well.
After the commotion Edward looked up at Esme. "Mommy, can I still be princess?" Esme smiled at him and stroked his hair, "You can be whatever you'd like," she smiled. He giggled and continued to play; careless to the world around him. The family continued to shop and before they left, Edward ended up with a new princess book and a tiara.
