I swear
The sun sets prettier
In small towns
------------------------------

~Jasper~

Beauty. That's the only word I can use to describe this sunset. It's the most beautiful one i've seen in a while. The most beautiful one i've seen since my mom passed. Rolling purple clouds intertwined with pink ribbons. Orange cuts through like a knife. Bringing diversity to the otherwise violet sky. It's absolutl.. "I swear the sun sets prettier in small towns." A calm voice says behind me, crashing through my thoughts. "Or maybe it's just because people in the city don't notice." I glance over my shoulder. A mysterious boy comes into my sight. His light, ocean blue eyes stare back at my emerald ones. I can see the rolling clouds reflecting off of them. "Well, people in the city don't know what they're missing. They don't realize what's right in front of them!" I turn my attention back towards the sky, mesmerized by it once again. "Oh, but pretty green eyes, i'm behind you."

I feel my cheeks turn a light crimson colour as his words seep through my head and heart. "No way blue eyes. I never knew"  I turn my attention back towards the sunset, watching the last sliver of colour set beyond the horizon. Another day withought the green flash. One day, one day i'll see it. I hear the rustling of grass and leaves as all the people around me begin to scurry back to their oh soo busy lives. "You know the sun is set now. You can leave." There's his calm voice again. "Well, techinally I can leave whenever I want. It's a public place ya know." An echo rings through my head as I turn to face him. "Yeah, but what's the point of staying? The night sky isn't pretty!" Wide eyes is all he gets. "What do you mean it's not pretty?" The tone of my voice becomes slightly sharper. "It's just black with white dots. That's just what I want to sit down and watch." Sarcasm laces with every word. "No. it's way more than that. It's like a world beyond our own. It's not just black, it's space dust and Nebulei and intersteller matter. It's not just white dots. They're stars. Millions of years old. Full of so much history and well, gases. Can't you see? The earth is just a small part of a solar system which is a smaller part of a galaxy which is.." "You're putting me to sleep. It's summer time, chill with the science shit." Interrupted once again. "Fine."

I take a seat on the damp grass, wet with the dew from the rain shower a few hours ago. The stars begin to become increasingly more visable as day becomes night. They scatter across the sky like the freckles on blue eyes cheeks. "You can't tell me that the stars aren't beautiful. I mean, just look at them!" My gaze turns again towards the magnificent sky. "Okay, they aren't beautiful." I feel him take a seat on the grass next to me. From the corner of my eye, I can see him. The moonlight reflects off his big, bright eyes. The light makes his freckles even more noticible than before. His messy brown hair falls gently over his eyes, sweeping across his eyebrows ever so gently. "Like what ya see green eyes?" Only now do I notice that i'm staring. "Oh i'm sorry, I was just.... nvm." Flustered. Great, now my cheeks are red. I can sense his smirk without even looking at him. Asshole.

"Ya know, the longer you stare at the stars..." I look at him with hopeful eyes, hoping he finally understands their beauty, despite his thick skull. "Yes...." He balances his body weight out slowly. "The more boring they become." Here I was thinking that he finally came to his senses. pfft. "Ya know, the longer I stare at you, the more you confuse me." I say, intertwined with a tone that I can't really place. "Ahh, well i'm glad you admit that you we're staring at me." He winks at me before standing up and brushing off his pants.

He reaches his hand out in front of me. "Cmon, you're not just gonna sit here and watch the stars all night." I look up at the sky briefly and then back down at his hand. "Well that was the plan, considering my dad isn't picking me up until....uh.....10." I shove my phone back into my pocket after looking at the time. "Why so late?" I don't take my focus off the stars above. "He thinks i'm at a friends house." I sigh and look down at my hands. "Why did you lie to him?" He looks at me with questioning eyes. "Well aren't you just full of questions today." His nod and slight smirk force me to roll my eyes. "Well if you must know, he doesn't like me spending so much time watching the sky. So I tell him that I'm going to a friends house but instead I always just come here." I shrug slightly. "Why doesn't he like you watching the sky? What's wrong with liking the sky?" I release a sigh. "I'd rather not talk about it." He just nods and gives me a weak smile.

"I can give you a ride home if you want." Grabbing my outstretched hand, he helps me off the ground. "No that's fine. My dad will be here soon anyways." He nods and puts his hands in his pockets. "I'll wait here with you until he shows up." "Thank you!" I say, flashing him a smile. "So, Do those pretty green eyes belong to a name?" I chuckle slightly and nod gently. "Jasper." I see headlights sweep across the empty field. "That's my dad. Thank you for staying though!" He smiles. "No problem at all. Maybe I'll see y'a around sometime." And with that, he begins to walk away. "Wait!" He turns around once again. "I didn't catch your name." He smiles back at me. "River."

Heyy. So what did y'a think?? I think the end was a bit rushed but that's because it almost 4 Am rn😂 Anyways, I hope you enjoyed the the "first" chapter and I'm sorry for any mistakes that I may have made. 👋🏻
