I wake up to the sound of a busy street outside. I get up out of bed and look out of my window to see a few black vans parked outside. I watch intently as a group of men stand outside their vans and talk in a huddled group. It's not until I see them heading towards my gate that I begin to worry. I shut close the curtains and rush into my aunts room, grabbing the key on my way.
We haven't had anyone come here before but me and Kate have a plan inset for whenever they come for us.
"Kate!" I exclaim loudly as I rush into her room. She jolts awake almost immediately and gets out of bed with wide eyes.
"Wh-what happened?" She asks frantic as she rushes towards me. Just stares at me blankly for a second before she realises whats going on. "They're here aren't they?" She asks with her lips trembling.
I nod with teary eyes. She grabs my hand and we rush downstairs. We run into the dining room and pull back the furry white rug we have placed under my mothers green leather chair.
Kate pushes away the chair and opens up the latch. "Lilah! Get down!" She hurries me, trying to get me down as quick as possible. I jump down and wait at the bottom for Kate. She gets down seconds later after sorting out both the rug and the chair. Kate locks the latch and we take a seat down in the corner of the basement.
My uncle James made this little place when I first came to live with him and Kate. He died 2 years ago in a car chase, he was chasing after somebody who was after me. And so yes, his death was because of me and I don't think I'll ever get over that.
"We need to stay quite-" Kate hushes and I nod slowly. "Have you got the key?" She then asks shakily.
"Yeah-" I say and take it from my pocket. Kate sadly smiles and sighs in relief.
"Good-" she says. "They should be gone in 10 minutes, they'll go as soon as they realise the key isn't up there."
"What if they find us?"
"Then we run out there-" Kate points over towards the small hatch that leads to outside. She looks to me, "We run and we don't stop running until we're out of their sight."
