Ryan's pov

The train gradually slowed, and finally stopped. I felt my heart beating, and all Spencer and I could do was look at each other looking like we were about to explode.

"Holy crap! We're going to be wizards!" I exclaimed, and he nodded excitedly. I felt Jon and Brendon staring at us, and when I looked, they were watching us in amusement. I felt myself flush again.

"Hopefully there's cute people here," Spencer said, reaching for the door. I couldn't help myself but glance and Brendon, and he turned to look at me too.

I saw Jon look uncomfortable, and his lazy eyes sagged lower. Did he like Spencer?

If he did, I wanted to slap Spencer. He's actually pretty cute.

"Uh, yeah. Hey, is the Sorting ceremony right now?" I asked Brendon and Jon. I felt bad for pointing my questions at Brendon only.

"Yeah, I think we go to the grounds by boat, or something. At least, that's what my dad told me," Jon answered, shrugging.

I hummed, jumping off the train. Spencer and I waited for Jon and Brendon, then we turned to walk towards the lake we saw on the train.

And stopped dead in our tracks.

The largest man I've ever seen was looming over us, and I found myself unable to say anything. I looked at Spencer from the corner of my eyes, and he seemed mortified.

"Firs' years over 'ere," The large man said, though it was more of a deep grumble.

I looked over my shoulder to see what Brendon and Jon thought about this, but they didn't seem to care. Then I remembered that they grew up in the magical world.

A growing crowd of kids our age started to pool, and once mostly everybody was there, we started off towards the lake.

Each boat fit four, which was perfect.

We climbed in our little boat, and Jon and Spencer chose to row for us.

I was in the front, gazing at the castle, so excited yet strangely calm in this atmosphere. We were going at a steady pace and the black water reflected our lanterns that hung over the side of our boat.

I reached out to feel the freezing water through my fingertips. Then I pulled it out quickly as I reminded myself that I didn't know what swam in the depths of this lake. There might be something terrifying, like a monster.

I would've dismissed that thought if I didn't know magic was real. Yet I still was afraid of large bodies of water, and this one was no different. I looked back at Jon and Spencer rowing, engaged in a quiet conversation.

I could tell they got along perfectly and quickly.

I peered further backwards, to Brendon's back. He was looking at where we once stood, and I seen his shoulders sag as he sighed.

I stared at the back of his head for a while, then turned back towards the growing castle.

Brendon's pov

I watched the train grow smaller, and sighed. There was no turning back now, and panic started to kick in. I didn't know what I wanted.

There was Slytherin, a house I was practically born in. They were cunning and ambitious. Sure, I was ambitious. But I didn't exactly value it that much.
