"Dive to your right!" Evie's voice echoed off the grey metal walls.
"Go with your gut!" Jacob shouted. I saw Evie elbow him in the stomach, her hands on her forehead in irritation.
"She needs to do exactly what we say in order to win!"
"Just let her do what she wants!"
I looked around frantically, surveying the situation, just as Evie had taught me. I then closed my eyes, breathing deeply. I felt the training mentor's movements...he was directly in front of me.
I opened my eyes. As the Assassin swung his sword, aiming for my head, I ducked, sending a punch to his gut. Looking up, I saw that his sword was about to fall upon me, so I dove to the left. Rolling sideways, I pressed my fingers against the metal floor, increasing friction."Friction is key," Evie had told me in parkour class. "It is always a good idea to gain your balance, even before you start to fight. Mentally and physically." I crouched low to the ground, ready to spring. I let my training hidden blade slide out, and held it as if I were about to do a Jump Attack.
The buzzer wrung, a loud, obnoxious sound, that indicated that my training session was over.
I stood silently and smoothly, walking over to Evie. I was already expecting criticism...it is how she teaches.
"What was that?!" Evie looked at me, anger seeping from her facial features.
I walked past her calmly, taking my sweat towel from Jacob's outstretched hand. Setting my training blades on a chair, I didn't even glance at Evie. "Another training fight won."
           "Don't be such a smart--"
"Evie, all that matters is that she survived."
I looked up, a satisfied smile stretched across my lips. "Thank you, Jacob."
"You need to listen to me, I am your mentor, not him."
"I know. But it's still fun to push your buttons."
Evie extended her hidden blade, and raised it to the bottom of my chin. Her other hand gripped the back of my neck. My eyes widened in shock, her face in mine.
"Evie!" Jacob put his hand gently on his sister's arm. "Stay your blade from the flesh of the innocent."
"You listen to me, Avalen." Evie said, furious, ignoring Jacob.
"You'll let me teach you, and you will grow to be a stragetic Assassin." She retracted her blade, letting go of me.
I gasped for the air that I was holding in, and gingerly put the tip of my fingers on the raw underside of my chin.
"Yes, Mentor," I choked out. Evie excused herself, turned and walked out of the room, and left Jacob and I alone.
As I watched the other apprentices train, I realized that they each fought like thier mentors. Arno's apprentice, for example, used a hidden crossbow very well.
"Please forgive her," Jacob said apologeticly, interrupting my thoughts. "She doesn't tend to fancy spontaneous things...or individuals."
"Really? I couldn't tell!" I said, being the queen of sarcasm that I always am.
"Sometimes, though, it's okay to do what you feel is right." Jacob looked at the ground, as if remembering something.
"Oh God, don't get started about the Rooks." I begged sarcastically. I remembered playing Assassin's Creed Syndicate, and how Jacob would never shut up about the Rooks.
Jacob laughed. "I know why you and Evie don't get along well,"
        "Why's that?"
"You're too much alike." He crossed his arms. "I love pushing her buttons too."
"I know. You always put her in a bad mood, then send me off to find her." I laughed.
"That statement was too accurate." Jacob chuckled and sat in one of the metal chairs that lined the wall and leaned back, tilting his top hat down.
I opened my mouth to say more, but I suddenly felt a hand on my shoulder. I turned my head, expecting to find Evie. But was I saw was, not at all, Evie.
"Hey, I--ah, never got to meet you." Chase, looking exactly as he did yesterday when I saw him in the Animus quarter, stood behind me.
I whipped around, nodding my head smoothly and politely. "It is pleasant to greet you, Chase."
"As it is to you, Avalen." He turned, taking his hand off my shoulder. "And you must be Jacob."
Jacob held out his hand, looking up. "Yep. That's me."
Chase took it, smiling at the both of us. "So, did you win your training fight today?"
"I did." I responded, taking a step toward him. "Did you?"
          "Yes."
"Who is your Mentor?" I asked him.
He turned and pointed at none other than Callum Lynch.
I gasped, and when Chase heard it, he turned and smiled happily.
The smile suddenly reminded me of Jake, and how he used to grin like that. I missed him now, especially since I wont be able to see him until I become a full Assassin, and even then, barely at all. I wished that he was here, training to be an Assassin as I am. But I knew that could never happen, since you must be chosen or come from an Assassin family.
"Were you chosen or born Assassin?" I asked Chase in curiosity.
            "I was, uh--," Chase stuttered.
            "Hello?"
"B-born," he spit out. Chase rubbed his elbows nervously.
"Did I say something I shouldn't have?" I said, concerned. Jacob chuckled softly, watching us speak.
"No. You're fine." Chase was normal again, putting his arms at his sides.
I opened my mouth to disagree, but a voice interrupted me. "Avalen, time to go to the Animus." Evie stood in the doorway of the training arena, beckoning me with her hand.
"Pardon," I said to Chase. His face fell. "I-I'll talk to you later, okay?" I put my hand on his shoulder reassuringly.
"Have fun in the Animus!" Jacob tilted his top hat up long enough to wink at me. I rolled my eyes and ran over to Evie.
