"You know, for a newly appointed apprentice, she sure does sleep late."
I awoke to the sound of Jacob's voice. As I slowly sat up, I groaned, lightly touching my head. "Where am I?"
"There she is!" Jacob said, standing with his arms crossed on my right.
"Where am I?" I asked again. I opened my eyes to find myself in a room with metal walls, with Evie and Jacob at either sides of my bed. The bed was comfortable, a light blanket laid carefully atop me. The wool woven cover had the signature Assassin's Creed symbol sewn in the center of it.
"Where am I?" I repeated. I was wide awake now, suddenly aware of the pain in my knees. "And why do my legs hurt?"
"It is only temporary," Evie said, slightly irritated. "Did you sleep well?" She asked me, an edge to her voice.
"Which is temporary? The pain in my legs, or this place that I'm in?" I responded, ignoring a glare from Evie with an annoyed roll of my eyes. Why are they ignoring my questions? I thought.
"If you truly want to be an assassin, you might want to respect your mentor a bit better." Evie gritted her teeth. "And before you ask, Avalen, no; you may not leave this room until it is your time to use the Animus."
I frowned. "Why can't I explore? Is there something you want to hide?" I returned Evie's glare with light rebellion.
"Ya, come on, Eves! Have a little fun once in while!" Jacob walked over to her and set his hand on her shoulder. "Don't be so uptight!"
Evie turned her head toward him. "Jacob, she must rest."
"So? Can I just show her around the place?" He gave Evie a sarcastic pleading face. "Please, my dearest sister?" He batted his eyelashes playfully, making me laugh.
Evie sighed and rolled her eyes. "Alright. But no training," she added, glancing knowingly at Jacob.
"You have my word." Jacob smiled, but even I could tell it was a mischevious one.
"Alright," Jacob turned to me. "Where shall we go first?"
"I don't know," I told him, my irritation returning. "You guys still haven't told me where I am."
I swing my legs over so that I'm sitting on the edge of the bed, looking up at Evie. She clenched her fists, and then let them hang at her side. Her face lightened a little as Jacob held out his hand, gesturing for me to get up.
"I will show you once we are out of this room," he says, glancing at his outstretched hand, kindness shining in his eyes.
I looked at his face and smiled, setting my hand over his. Jacob gripped my wrist, pulling me out of bed.
As I stand, I realize that the pain in my knees vanished.
"Why don't you show her to Chase," Evie said, nudging Jacob playfully, purpose in her eyes. Jacob held his head down and eyed the floor, a smile on his lips and a pink blush across the top of his cheeks and on the bridge of his nose.
"Sorry," I said, coming back to my own senses. "I don't know what you are talking about." When I didn't receive an answer, I spoke once more. "Now, Jacob, lead me out of here." I was suddenly aware of how close I was to him, and automatically stepped back, embarrassed.
"Okay." Jacob stood up straight, dusting himself off, and walking over to the door. "Come on," He said. "There is so much to show you!"
Opening the door, Jacob let me through, him following behind.
Before me was the most awesome and amazing thing I had ever seen in my entire life. A large metal dome, almost like a soccer stadium, towered over my head. There was a huge open cafeteria that laid in the middle of the building, with hallways and gym-sized rooms branching out from it.
Assassins, some in full costumes, some in training outfits, scurried every which way. I figured that the people with cool, Assassin's Creed game-looking costumes--sorry, uniforms, were fully trained Assassins, and the ones who weren't are apprentices. I looked down at my own clothes, and saw a light grey skirt with the Assassin's Creed emblem on the bottom right of it, black fitness leggings underneath that reached down just below my knees. The rest of my body wore a tight fitted hoodie, with the sleeves going down to my elbow. An Assassins Creed symbol was once again sewn onto my chest, where my heart is. I felt a hood on the back of my head, and pulled it up like everyone else. Black parkour gloves were over my hands, and my brown hair hung down past my collarbone in a wave of silk.
The excitement of my new life overwhelmed me, and so I started running, laughing, all around the building. First through the cafeteria, where I saw Arno, Connor, and Avelin having a conversation at a table, with steak on their trays in front them. Then to a long hallway, with a room full of antiques from every time period you could think of. After that, I saw the training arena, a place were clothes were being fitted on new Assassins, and lots of other interesting places. All the while, Jacob laughed constantly at my excitement, always staying close behind me.
Until I came to a stop. A room, more grand than everything else, stood in front of me. A large robotic arm held a woman with twin hidden blades up in the air, as lights all around her acted as a 360° screen. There were littler rooms next to the big one, with people with what looked like Virtual Reality masks on their faces.
My eyes were trained on something else, though. In the large room, there was a line, seemingly waiting for their turn on the robotic arm. In that line, there was a boy, my age, looking straight at me. My mouth hung open, without my knowing why, as I stared back at him. The boy had round glasses, an outfit like mine, except he had pants. Pink flushed at his cheeks now, as he swiftly looked at the ground. I blinked, and let out a breath I didn't know I was holding in.
"I see you have found the Animus quarter." Jacob said, coming to my side. He looked at me, and followed my gaze. He laughed even harder than he was before. "And I see that you have also found Chase. At least, that's the name chooses to tell us. I don't think that's his real name, though."
"Oh." I said, trying to act like I didn't care by crossing my arms and bending one leg.
"Don't worry," Jacob said, knowing that I, in fact, did care. "You'll have plenty of time to spend with him." He winked and smiled at me.
Do I even want to know what he meant?
"We should be getting back to Evie." Jacob said, turning around. When I didn't move, my eyes glued to Chase, Jacob put his hand on my shoulder. "Come on."
I turned around and walked next to him. We walked into the cafeteria and into a new hallway that I hadn't visited yet.
"Why are we here?" I asked Jacob.
"This is the living quarters. Everyone has their own rooms--well, some have roommates. We are going to mine and Evie's room." He responded, pulling a plastic card from his pocket. It looked like a key to a hotel room, but with his and Evie's name and their room number.
Once we were about halfway through the long hallway, Jacob stopped in front of a door. He slipped the card into a slot in the door, waited for a beep, and stepped in. Inside the room, Evie and a man I reconized instantly as Henry Green, were standing in the center if the room. They were facing each other and talking. Evie had a red tulip in her hand, holding it close to her nose. When they noticed Jacob and I come through the door, they stepped back away from each other.
Henry walked past Jacob and I, and as he was about to exit the room, Jacob said, "See you later, Greenie."
Evie and Henry sighed simultaneously, irritated, and Henry left the room without a word. Jacob shut the door behind him, and walked over to sit on a bed. There were two beds, side by side, one with black bedding, and one with dark purple.
"Where's her card, Eves?" Jacob said, leaning back on the black bed, resting his head on the pillow. He took off his hat and set it on the ground next to his bed.
"I have it right here," Evie said, patting her side. She looked at me, no longer irritated. "Did you enjoy your tour of the Assassin's Guild of America?"
"Wait, America?!" I suddenly realized that I didn't remember anything past last night, except that I got on a train with Evie. "You took me to the U.S.?!"
"Yep. This is the last existing Guild in the country." Evie acted as if it meant nothing.
"Okay...", I responded, still a bit shocked.
"You still hadn't answered my question." Evie smiled politely.
"Yes, we did." Jacob responded for me. "And we also met Chase." Jacob gave Evie a knowing look that only they shared.
"Can someone please tell me what is so important about Chase?" My irritation rose as they looked at each other, smirking, again. Evie opened her mouth to speak.
"Avalen, Chase's ancestor was in love with yours."What's up guys! Thank you for waiting for the next chapter!
