Hazel's POV
I wake up the following morning, unsure of where I am. It takes me a moment to remember the events that occurred yesterday. I think I have imagined them until I recognize that I am on Thayne's couch. Memories from yesterday flood back, and I smile. Sitting up on the couch, I wonder if Thayne is awake.
"Morning," he says from the kitchen, answering my question.
I look over at him, "Good morning," I reply.
"Did you sleep okay, and everything?" He inquires.
"Yeah," I say, joining him in the kitchen.
"I'm making pancakes," he says, "Wanna help?"
"Sure," I respond. We pull the ingredients out from his cupboards and the fridge. We put flour, eggs, milk, and butter into a large bowl. After it is mixed, Thayne pulls out a grill and turns it on. He pours the batter on and sprinkles in chocolate chips. I look at him, confused.
"What?" He asks, "Have you never had chocolate chip pancakes?"
I shake my head, finding it odd anyone would put something as sweet as chocolate chips in pancakes, something just as sweet.
"You're in for a treat," he says, grinning mischievously and adds even more chocolate chips onto the cakes.
We finish making the pancakes after about twenty minutes, and we sit at the counter to eat them. He watches me as I take my first bite of the pancakes. My eyes widen. "These are amazing!" I blurt, and take another bite.
"I told you they would be," Thayne says, and begins eating his. I eat as many of the chocolate-filled pancakes as I can muster. Together Thayne and I finish off the pancakes easily.
While we are cleaning up the dishes, Thayne receives a text. "Jasmine says she and the girls want to take you shopping today," he says as I put away the last plate.
I sigh, "I don't want them to spend a bunch of money on me."
Thayne laughs, "If you go with them, there is no way they are not spending a bunch of money."
"That just makes me feel worse!"
"Well, you're going anyway," Thayne says, causing me to sigh again.
Thayne gives me one of his extra toothbrushes to use, and I try my best to brush my hair with his comb. When I finally get it to look somewhat calm, Thayne and I hop in his car to head to Phillipa's place.
Because it is 7:30 and we are in New York City, the streets are packed with cars. Multiple times we come to a complete standstill even though the light is green. After forty-five minutes of painstakingly slow driving, we finally arrive at Phillipa's apartment. Thayne walks me up.
He knocks on the door, and only seconds later Jasmine swings the door open. "Hazel!" She yells, and pummels into me with a hug.
"Hi Jasmine," I say, smiling widely.
Renée and Phillipa walk into sight from behind the door.
"Hey, Hazel," Phillipa says. "Ready to go?"
"Um," I say, "Can I borrow a hairbrush? All Thayne had was a comb."
"Of course!" Phillipa says. She leads me to the bathroom and hands me a brush.
"Thanks, Phillipa," I say.
"Please," she says, "Call me Pippa."
"Okay," I say. A grin spreads across my face.
I brush my hair once again and we head out to shop. Jasmine shows us this really cute place, and we all have fun trying stuff on. We go to another little place and look at stuff. We continue making our way down the street we are on until we are all loaded with shopping bags.
When we arrive back at Pippa's apartment I set the bags I am holding down and collapse onto the couch.
"That was exhausting," I say.
Renée smiles. "Welcome to New York."
I smile, happy to have these people as friends.
