"Come on," Max said, circling me. "I thought your dad taught you better than that." I groaned from my spot on the floor. Max and I had been training for the past hour. And in that past hour Max and managed to knock me down at least six times. Today was training in our human forms day and I honestly preferred training in wolf form. At least then Max couldn't give me any smug smirks. Like he was currently doing now.
I brought my legs up to my head, using the velocity I got from bringing them back down to help as I vaulted off my hands and ended up back on my feet. I brought my hands up in a defensive stance as I again faced Max. "No training in the world can make up for the Beta blood in your system, Maxi," I told him, using an old childhood nickname he wasn't very fond of. Max was the son of the pack's Beta, and one of my best friends. Since my dad was the Gamma Max and I had basically been attached at the hip growing up. Along with the Alpha's son, Nik. All of our dads were best friends and worked very closely together. So we had spent most of our childhood being supervised by Max and Nik's moms while playing around the pack house while our dads talked about how to keep the pack safe. My mom had been lost to a Rouge attack shortly after I was born. The only real memory I had of her was the necklace I always wore around my neck. Alpha Lucas had taken it off her body and given it to me the day she died.
"Just be glad Nik isn't here or you'd be on your ass twice as fast," Max taunted. I growled at his taunt, my wolf not liking his reminder that Nik, having Alpha blood in him, could kick both our asses at the same time. It was a continuous game we played. Max and I tried to jump Nik at random times and catch him off guard. The only rule was that Nik couldn't be in the middle of Alpha duties.
"Ok, guys," a voice called before I could jump at Max. "Break it up." We turned to the familiar voice to see Nik himself striding toward us. He looked tired but happy to see us. We'd been seeing less and less of Nik these days as his eighteenth birthday was fast approaching; which meant he would be taking over as Alpha.
"Well look who decided to grace us with his presence," I said, walking over to where I'd thrown my water bottle. I could feel Nik rolling his eyes behind me. He knew we didn't hold anything against him for his increased absences. Being Alpha was a big job. In reality, I'd been seeing less and less of Max as well, since he was in line for the Beta job as soon as Nik came of age. Max had already turned 18, but he had to wait for Nik to as well before he got to take over as Beta from his dad. If I was male I'd take over as Gamma, but since I wasn't the role got passed down to someone else. Instead, I got the job of leaving my family and friends as soon as I found my mate. I'd gotten into plenty arguments with my dad over it, and he'd actually gotten the Alpha involved a couple times. Nik and Max had both offered to mate with me, but I couldn't do that to their mates. Or mine if I was being completely honest with myself. Besides, marrying one of them would be like marrying my brother. It'd just be weird.
"So to what do we owe the pleasure of your company, future Alpha?" I teased, my eyes sparkling with mischief. I always got a kick out of testing Nik's boundaries; wanting to see just how much I could get away with since I was one of his best friends. Though I knew Nik also got some pleasure out of putting me in his place and getting me to submit to him. I kept his Alpha senses sharp.
This time both of the boys rolled their eyes at me, causing me to chuckle into my water bottle. "What's up Nik?" Max asked, using his discarded shirt as a towel to wipe the sweat off his face. His black hair was plastered to the top of his head, and he had to a "Justin Beiber hair flip" that every teenage boy always did for some reason to get it out of his face. The boy could honestly use a hair cut.
"An Alpha's coming to visit. Dad wants both of you there. He said you have about two hours to get ready," Nik replied. We both looked at Nik expectantly, waiting for him to tell us what pack the Alpha was from. Not that it really mattered. An Alpha was an Alpha and deserved our respect no matter what pack it was from. But which pack they were from would determine how many daggers I hid under my dress tonight.
