EPILOGUE:
Cassie screamed at a horrible pitch from the other room. I weaned her recently and so she’s been a little fussy.
Several months old she is, but she has been getting pretty smart. She walked at one month and has been talking even lately. I always wondered how come she came so early. Not that I’m fussing. Not having to worry about me hurting myself or getting kidnapped because of her was a relief.
I love her so much. She is incredible, and Zack is completely wrapped around her tiny finger. Jack likes her, too, but doesn’t say it. Zack had a theory or two on maybe why she came early. He told me that it could be from the shot and how what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. But maybe it made her stronger, and grow faster than the average baby both physically and mentally.
Another theory was because I was stressed out a lot, and because of that induced labor. Then the last theory was since I was human, the babies are born earlier than Twiads. Human babies are born at nine months. But that doesn’t explain being born at eight months. The whole thing was a jumbled mess.
Someone rang the doorbell, silencing the crying baby.
“I’ll get it!” Jack called.
I came down the stairs, curious. We never have visitors.
“Henry?” Jack said when he opened the door.
“Hello, Jack. I need to talk to you… And Zack.” Henry, ah Henry. A Twiad, and also the one who hated me. Or maybe still does.
I grabbed Cassie. I just wanted her in my arms.
“Hello, Samantha. I see you had your baby,” Henry commented.
“Hello, Henry… Um… Is Zoey with you?” This question has been in my mind for a year now.
“No, she isn’t. I took her home... After all of these awful tragedies, she… lost the baby. And I don’t have a home for her to stay in. so I took her back to her house. Her home.” Henry seemed sad. I think he actually cared for Zoey.
I nodded, trying not to smile. She is safe. Not being tortured. Not held hostage. She is at home with her parents.
Zack came into the room then and sat on the couch close to Henry.
“Hello, Henry,” he greeted.
“Hello, Zack… I wanted to tell you something, or more like give you an option. I and several others want to take our planet back. Half of our group is going to free our men from here on earth and the rest will head out soon to Renton. We are going to kill the men there and take back our home.”
Zack and Jack took all of this in while I was still trying to wrap my mind around how this was an option?
“I want you guys to come and help us get our home back,” Henry went on.
“I don’t know if I can. I have a baby now,” Zack muttered, looking at me.
They were silent. Jack was pondering over this. Henry was waiting for a reply, and Zack looked like he was ready to say no. then I butted in.
“I know where Cassie can stay where it’s safe,” I muttered.
They all looked at me.
“Cassie will stay with you,” Zack told me.
“You don’t think I’m not going do you?” I questioned.
The look on all of their faces was shock. Then they all shook their head.
“You’re not going Sam,” Zack told me.
“It’s not safe,” Jack said.
“You will just slow us down,” Henry muttered.
“I’m going,” I said sternly. “I know how to fight.”
They both shook their heads. Henry thought for a moment. It made me curious.
“Take me down.” He stood up and told me.
“I beg your pardon?” I stared at him.
“Take me down... Unless you can’t…” he muttered.
I was suddenly nervous about how well I was at fighting. I stood in front of him, ready. Just like that, the fight began. I punched under his arm—a pressure point that was enough to leave him gasping. Then I grabbed his arm and pinned it behind his back. He struggled against my hold. Then I pulled his arm up till he was on the ground. Wow that felt good.
I smiled and then released my grasp.
“You’re in,” he gasped, flexing his arm in wincing.
Jack and Zack were about to protest. I silenced them with the ‘I’ll take you down’ look.
“Let’s get ready to get our planet back.” I headed upstairs. Yes, I said our planet, because I’m not going to be without Zack. I know where to bring my baby to. Someone I can trust…
