The lunch bell rang loudly throughout the school, dismissing me from the boring history class I was in. Everyone in the class, myself included, quickly scrambled out of the stuffy room out into the crowded hallways. I bolted down the hall and to my locker, quickly opening it. I shoved all my textbooks into my locker, replacing it for a copy of The Sun Is Also a Star. Students from all over flooded into the cafeteria. I took my usual seat at the back, opening my book. I also plugged in headphones so no one would bother me.
As I was reading, I felt my earphones be yanked from my ears. I turned around to see a guy I've never seen before. He took a seat across from me, opening his lunch.
"Can I help you?" I questioned the boy.
"Hi, I'm Jonah," he introduced himself. "I saw you come in the school with my friend Daniel."
I nodded. "That's correct. You're here for what reason?" I asked, aching to read.
"This is the first time seeing him with a girl so we're all hyped up," he told me.
I looked at him i'm interest. Seeing as he wasn't going to leave, I placed my bookmark in the page, shutting my book. Jonah took a bite out of his sandwich.
"Do you even have friends?" Jonah asked me.
I pointed to my group of friends sitting at another table. Jonah looked at me in confusion, as if wondering why I was here instead of with them.
"They get annoyed by me reading," I explained, answering his unspoken question.
"Come sit with me and my friends," Jonah smiled, pointing over to a group of guys over at another table. Among the group of four, I noticed Daniel laughing and talking amongst his friends.
"You don't mind?" I asked him.
"Not at all, let's go," he spoke, grabbing my hand and dragging me to his table.
I quickly picked my book, earphones, and phone from the table. Jonah walked quickly. He was much taller than me making his legs longer. For every stride he took, I had to take two steps just to match his speed.
Jonah pulled out a chair, seating me in between Daniel and Corbyn from Calculus. I smiled at the two politely, pulling out my book. Opening the page and removing the bookmark, I began reading yet again.
"Oh hi Aaliyah!" Daniel greeted with a smile.
I rolled my eyes slightly, mentally groaning. I looked up from my book to Daniel, giving him a toothless smile.
"Hey," I greeted back.
The boys continued their conversation. I continued reading my book. Suddenly, it was taken from my hands and the book was slammed shut. I saw Daniel holding it.
"You just lost my page!" I shouted at him.
Even though the book was closed, I read it enough times to know which page I was on. Still, I was mad at Daniel for interrupting my reading.
"Do you ever not have a book?" Daniel asked me.
"I do things other than read," I told him.
"Really? Like what?"
"I walked to school without reading," I smirked.
"You walk past my house every single morning, most days with a book in hand. Don't tell me lies," Daniel laughed.
I looked up at him, tilting my head in confusion. Normally, I walked past his house much earlier than today. He never left as I was walking past his house. How would he know?
"I write stories too," I told Daniel.
"I'm forcing you to hang out with me and the guys today. If you're not always reading, you won't mind spending a few hours with us, away from books, right?" Daniel asked me.
"Fine," I sighed.
