"Pain,  all we ever felt was pain."
(Flashback)
Amy's pov
We were orphans. That's what I remember. That is the beginning we all remember.
We refused to leave as children. The six of us would have been separated, so we chose to stay orphans. Basketball was an activity children there did when they were board. We in fact never expected it to come so naturally for us.
It became a simple way of living as kids and it became second nature.
Everything changed when a man had taken interest in adopting all of us. We were children and we were blinded by the excitement of having a family together, but we had no idea.
The man we came to know as our only father was a drunk that came home to beat us. It wasn't every day, but it happened frequently.
Most times it wouldn't go to far.
To distract ourselves, we played basketball and enjoyed those brief moments of happiness.

Until...he went too far.

On that day, everything changed.
He refused to have us go to school or make friends or leave anywhere. So on that day one of us disobeyed.

(Trixy's pov)
There was a boy, a boy that everyday we would meet me in the market. I had only gone to the market to do errands for the house. Anna cooked and the others cleaned. I was always the one to go shopping.
I only got the chance to talk with him a few times before father followed me to the market that day.
"How dare you?!" He forcefully grabbed my arm and dragged me to the house. I looked to find that he had a bottle of liquor in his had and I knew it was bad.
"Father please! Please don't!" I begged as I was thrown to the floor in the kitchen.
"What's happening, what's going on?" Anna in the kitchen stepped away from the dinner she was making and looked down at me in tears.

"Father you can't do this? What ever she did you can't do this." Anna was begging father to stop, but he ignored her and grabbed a whip and he began to slash My back with no mercy.
"AH! AAAAAHHH!" My vision became a blur from the pain and the tears and the screams of my sisters in horror.
(Mari's pov)
I ran into the kitchen as I heard the screams.
As I looked down I saw my sister's back slashed by father's whip and Anna holding a large knife in her hands threatening father to stop.

"Stop! STOP! Please stop it!" Anna pleading for him to have mercy.
"You think you can threaten me with that?!" Father grabbed the knife away from Anna easily and pushed her to the wall.
I couldn't help it and I ran towards him to stop him, but he turned quickly and with the knife in his hand he cut through my left eye. I remember blood and the pain in my left eye. I dropped to the ground screaming in pain as Anna went to my aid. She grabbed a towel and covered my face.
(Amy's pov)
I looked around the room and saw everything. I saw in one corner Emma was frozen in place with tears streaming down her face. Ariel was stunned as well.

"ARIEL! Ariel, Emma! I yelled to get Ariel's attention so that she can turn her away from all of this.
Ariel immediately reacted and ran to grab Emma and tried to calm her down.
Sssshhhh...it's going to be ok.
Father tried to go after Emma because she started screaming from seeing Trixy on the floor with slashes on her back and Mari screaming from the pain.

"Aaahhh!"

"Aaahhh!"

"Aaahhh!"

Emma covered her ears and yelled like this continuously. Father walked over to try to shut her up, but as he raised his hand to hit her I refused to allow it and I stood in front of him to stop him.

"I refuse to let you lay a hand on her!" I yelled at his face.
He grabbed me by the hair and said,
"Is that so?"

"I'm not afraid of you!" I spat at his face making sure I showed no fear or weakness.
He pulled my hair and began to drag me to the bedroom.
(Emma's pov)
I didn't know I was yelling until Ariel started to talk to me. I saw Amy stop father from hurting me when he started to drag her by the hair to the bedroom.
"NO! No papa NO!" I tried to crawl to my sister's aid but as I looked in her eyes she mouthed the words "it's ok, I can take it."
"Noooo!" Intended to follow but couldn't as I was being pulled back by Ariel.
(Ariel's pov)

I couldn't do anything, I knew if I let Emma go she would have suffered the same consequences Amy suffered. I pulled her into my arms.
"I'm so sorry." I told her in tears. "Forgive me."  I held her tight as she cried in my arms.

I knew she probably would have hated me after that because what happened after that was unforgivable.

There was nothing in the world that could have prepared me for what I saw that day. I walked through the door and her bruised naked body on the bed. The look in her eyes I would never forget. The light in them was gone as if she had lost all hope of being normal ever again.
"OH GOD! Nooo! I fell to the floor on my knees crying with my hand over my mouth with a sick feeling in my stomach.

I couldn't protect her. I couldn't stop crying and Emma just sat in the corner of the room. She had her head pressed against her knees and I could hear her sobbing. There was this look in Amy's eyes, like her soul had been wounded. There no life left in her. Her body looked numb and bruised. There were tears still rolling down her face.

What could I have done? On that same night we took off. We got on a bus a didn't get off until the bus rider told us it was the last stop. When we got off we had no where to go. We sat in a corner of the street until Charlie found us. Charlie who found us playing street basketball with a few grown ups to pass the time. He wanted us to play in a real team for a living but we told him that we never could. We made the decision that it would only haunt us if we were to play. It would only bring us sadness.
"Then why do you play?" Charlie asked.
"Because we believed for a moment that it may bring us some happiness." I told him.
"But I was wrong." I looked down in sadness.
"Then why don't you try something else?" Charlie asked.
"What do you mean?" Emma asked him this time as we all stood in silence.
"Why don't you play other sports to find what makes you happy?" Charlie smiled and patted us on the head.
"What if I were to take you all in so that you can find that happiness?" Charlie went on.
"You don't know us, why would you do that?" Mari asked him this time.
"Because I see something in you girls that I haven't seen before."
"What would that be?" I told him.
"Determination." He answered.
"It's like no other determination I have seen before. So, what do you say?" He waited for an answer.
"At this point I guess we have nothing to loose." Amy looked at all of us.
She knew we didn't want to go back to the orphanage or our father, that this man could never be worst then our father.

"Before you do though, you should know that this doesn't mean we trust you." Amy looked at him with a serious look in her eyes.
"I'm sure you won't, but I believe that I will earn your trust in time." Charlie ended it there and as he walked we followed.
