Today is my grandma's birthday, and I plan to go to visit her. I already did my training, this time earlier. I just need to ask the team for them to trust that I will return. As I walk towards the kitchen, I see Tony.
"Tony!" I say and he turns around.
"Oh hey Scottie." He says and I ignore his comment.
"I was just wondering if I could go see my grandma, it's her birthday today and I'll come right back after." I say pleadingly.
"Where does she live?" He asks me.
"She lives in Forest Hills." I say and he raises an eyebrow,
"Queens?" He asks and I nod.
"How are you going to get there?" He asks, now he's just acting like a parent.
"Tony, I have a ride back by the bank, it's fine." I say and he shakes his head.
"No, I'm taking you, no bother arguing, meet me in the car in five minutes." He says and I roll my eyes, shrugging and turning around.
"Thanks Tony!" I say and disappear, reappearing in my room. I change and put more ice on my black eye.
After that (my eye doesn't look much better but I'll just have to deal with it) I walk down to the parking lot of the building and see Tony standing by his car, talking on the phone. When he sees me he says a quick goodbye to whoever was on the other line and waves at me. I wave back and walk over to his expensive yellow sportscar and open the door, climbing in after Tony.
"So where does Miss Granny McGram Grams live?"
*********
"Thanks for the ride Tony!" I shout after him as he drives away. I decided to bus back because I didn't know what time I was gonna be finished.
As I walk past vaguely familiar places, I gently place my fingers over the eye that everyone who passes me stares at. I sigh and continue to walk, pulling my Mets hat tighter over my head, That's right, I like the Mets. Yes I know they aren't very good, but that's okay. I identify with them. They're just a bunch of not so good players who hit a lucky homerun occasionally, I felt the same. Most of the time I regret all my life descisions, but sometimes I feel like this is the path I should keep going down.
I enter the senior center holding on to my small present. When I enter the doors I head to the front desk and talk to the lady there about my grandma.
"Hazel!" My grandma's voice fills my ears and I turn to see her playing checkers with an elderly man. I smile and wave at her, walking over and giving her a hug. As she pulls away she sees my eye and gasps, "How did you get a black eye, honey?" She asks
I got punched by a Russian assasin.
"Oh I just tripped and my head hit the sink, it looks way worse than it is."
She nods, not looking totally convinced.
"So how are you?" I quickly change the subject as I adjust my hat.
"I'm just grand thank you!" She seems to forget about my eye right away, "How's Janice?" She asks about my mum and I try not to let my smile falter.
"She's doing good, she's great." I say and scratch the back of my neck as my voice goes an octave higher.
"Now why doesn't she come and visit like you sweetheart?" She asks.
"Oh she's just so busy with her job. But she sends her love, and this present is from both of us." I say and hand her the box.
