Eight years later..
Kayla's POV.
"The first form of magic was in.. "
"Rock form? " I answer clumsily.
My teacher sighs. "No Kayla.. In light. "
Her voice is laced with irritation and impatience which, by the way I'm used to.
I sigh. I hate this. This blows. I have one and a million places to be right now than here. Here we were in my room learning all about elementary magic. Oh joy..
I wanted the lesson at the balcony. But Miss-no-fun didn't agree. She said I would be distracted. To be fair, she was right. From my balcony, Alphagoth had a beautiful view especially in the evenings. There's a somewhat orange streak in the sky almost like it was leaking from the evening sun. And then the houses arranged in rows with people passing through. It was truly enchanting.
"are you even listening? " Her voice cuts off my day dream. Killjoy.
"er..." that's intelligent right?
She sighs. "You are really time consuming! "
"Thank you? "
I was so sure I saw her face booming red. We Alphagothans can't really hide emotions due to our translucent skin.
"OK.. OK I'm sorry.. I'll listen. "
"Too late! It's over already. " she says as she sips back into her jar.
No, she's not a genie. She's a spirit.
Like a thousand years old.
She comes whenever it's time for my magic lesson. Then appears in a more solid form to which she can actually touch you. That's why I really can't just close the lid of the jar. Trust me, against better judgement, I've tried. For the former teacher that is. Father didn't take that too well.
"She may never come back" She says. Marie was at my bed post, probably here to assist me with something.
"Good. She was mean anyway. "
"That was what you said about the last one. "
"she's a thousand years old.. It's not my fault she can't take a joke. "
Marie rolls her eyes and mutters something under her breath.
"Kayla.. What will your father say? . "
Just then, my doors give way to my father and no, he didn't use his hands so there was a bit of wind gushing through my hair.
"Kayla!" I really upset him this time.
"Papa.. " I sounded like the weakling I was.
He eyes Marie "leave us. " she takes a bow and walks out of the room. Now his fury can hit me. Hard.
"Kayla what is wrong with you? "
I sigh. It's time to have this blasted conversation for the umpteenth time. Here we go again.
"You can't keep chasing your teachers away. You need them. " he'll usually say
And I'll say"Papa I know but they don't really make it easy. "
"It's not meant to be easy. It's magic. Not everyone isn't blessed to have it!"
"you mean it's a curse " I murmur. This part though, I never mention and I realized that it would have been wiser if it stayed in the comfort of my head. Father's eyes narrow at me with his lips in a straight line.
