I woke up quite early the next morning, which was surprising seeing that yesterday was a long day. I wasn’t sure if Louis was a heavy sleeper or not, and there was only one way to find out if he was. “Louis” I say with a hushed tone. “Louis!” It seemed like he didn’t hear me but you never could be sure. I threw a pillow at him and he gave out a slight grunt and then started to drift off into sleep again. I could hear him snoring so I knew he was asleep for good this time. It had rained so much last night that my buckets were completely filled to the top. I ran inside to grab my shampoo and some soap. I didn’t want to take a shower if Louis was up, that would be weird. I grab my bin I used for laundry last night and dumped it out. I replaced it with half of a bin of the new rainwater I got. I pulled my long brown hair out of a bun and dunked my head into the water. It was cold, yet refreshing at the same time. I squeeze a little bit of the wonderful cherry smelling shampoo into my palm and lather my hair. It had been such a long time since I have had this luxury. I put my head into the water again to wash away all the suds. I look inside to see if Louis is still sleeping and sure enough, there he is snoring in his deep sleep. I roll my eyes and take off my take off my turtleneck so that I am just in my tank top and pants. I wash my feet and arms because I had taken a full on shower not two days ago. I feel even more refreshed than before, but my hair is drenched and dripping. I grab one of the blankets that I used last night to dry off with. Once my hair is nearly dried, I grasp a hair tie and put my hair up in a ponytail instead of a bun for once.
I’m starting to get hungry and I figure that when Louis wakes up that he will want some breakfast so I get right to it. Because I don’t have much as far as breakfast goes, I go over to where the fruits are. I have such a surplus of peaches and mandarin oranges, so they will suffice for us. I set them on my little table where I prepare most of my food. I look around for my stash of my empty fruit cocktail cans. I snatch up two of them and slice a small hole into the bottom of one of them. I open up the can of oranges and the can of peaches. I walk outside with the fruit, the punctured can, and the emptied fruit cocktail can. I go out onto the deck where I don’t care if it gets dirty because the rain will wash it away. I set down the emptied fruit cocktail can and place the punctured one over it. Carefully, I pour the peaches in and the liquid is separated from the fruit. I do the same with the mandarin oranges and I am left with a can of juice and a can of fruit. I walk back inside with just the fruit and then juice, leaving the other cans behind. I add a little bit of water to the juice mixture so that it isn’t too powerful. As I am in the middle of doing that I sleepy voice says, “What you making?”
I whiz around to see Louis standing right behind me. “Oh my gosh Louis! You scared me!” I shreik and jump. I just now realized that he was just a few inches taller than me and if my bun was in we might be the same height. “And I’m just making us some breakfast now go away.” I push him away playfully and he sits on the couch. I can feel his peircing stare on me as I finish preparing our meal, but I don’t want to look back at him. I serve up the mixture of peaches and oranges onto the plates that we used last night and pour the fruit juice concoction into two plastic cups that I rarely use.
I hand him a plate, a fork, and a cup and he looks at the cup suspiciously, “What is this?” He asks.
“Peach and orange juice that has been watered down.” I reply with a smile.
He gulps it down and announces, “This is the first sweet drink I’ve had since the apocalypse happened.”
“I have this on special occasions only.” I add on.
“Well what the occasion today?” He inquired me.
“We became allies of course!” I say with a huge smile on my face.
