Now Playing: Everything Went Numb by Streetlight Manifesto
She stood there in complete silence, refusing to believe what had happened right before her eyes. Nothing made sense. Sara was so lost in her own thoughts that she could hardly make out Buddy's yelling. "You shot Bats! What the hell are we going to tell Doc, huh? What are we going to do about the job tomorrow?" Baby didn't utter a single response, and Sara could clearly tell this was driving Buddy and Darling up the wall. "Baby, we have to go! Get the body in the trunk and let's take care of this." Darling spoke with confidence in her voice, regardless of what just occurred. It's like they were used to this.
Sara didn't know which route to take. Did she run? Did she demand an explanation? Did she rush back inside and call the cops? The girl was shaking and on the verge of tears. Through her anxiousness, she hadn't noticed Baby slowly inching closer to her. She made no movement whatsoever. "Sara?" He asked weakly, bending down to carry Bats' body. She didn't respond – she couldn't. Her eyes finally found their way to Baby, who was already lifting the lifeless body into the trunk of the car.
"What about her?" Buddy asked, pointing his index finger in Sara's direction. Darling was quick to reply to this. "We'll take her with us. Take her to Doc and–" Baby, as if snapping out of his trance, found it within himself to interrupt. "No." He simply stated, earning a puzzled look from the couple. "No? You don't get to say shit since you're the one who got us into this mess." Buddy argued back. Baby shook his head as he spoke up once again. "If we take her, we've got a missing person and a dead guy. It raises more suspicion, okay? Doc wouldn't want that."
Everything went numb for the money and the guns,
and every time he'd think it out: there's nothing to worry about.
Get in the van, don't deviate from the plan.
If everything goes smooth then you'll walk away a rich man.Sara knew that while Baby made a valid point, he was really trying to spare her. If Doc found out about this, she could only assume she'd end up like Bats with a bullet through the chest. Darling sighed in frustration, entering the backseat of the car and slamming the door with a loud thud. Sirens could be heard off in the distance, putting everyone into panic mode. "We're giving you a chance here. Don't screw it up." Sara was aware that Buddy was directing those words to her, although she didn't acknowledge it.
Was she really going to pretend as if none of this happened? How was that even possible? She looked up at Baby hopelessly as he placed his hands on her arms. Despite the awful thing he had to do, she knew that he did it to keep her safe. "I'm sorry, I wish I had more time to explain. Take my key and stay with Joe. I'll be there at two, okay? Wait for me, I'll be there." He kept his voice low as he spoke, obviously not wanting the other two to hear. Sara could only accept the key and nod hesitantly. "I'm sorry." Baby repeated as he walked away and got into the car. There was so much more that he wanted to say, and Sara could see it in the look he gave her.
She watched the vehicle drive off into the night as she began running in the opposite direction. The cops were on their way, and perhaps Eric had called them when he heard gunshots outside the diner. Either way, Sara had to escape. If not from the cops, then from the bloodstain on the concrete that would surely haunt her. She kept running, but no matter how far away she was from the diner, the image kept replaying in her head. It was almost on some sick sort of loop.
She tried to focus on how much further away she was from Baby's apartment. Sara didn't want to think about the line of work that Baby found himself stuck in. She didn't want to think about what kind of danger she was in now. She didn't want to think about what would've happened if Baby didn't pull the trigger on Bats. She just didn't want to think. Because of this, she attempted to distract herself by keeping count of each streetlight she walked by.
Ski mask. Check.
Sawn-off. Check.
Guilty conscience, fear of death. Check, check, check. She nearly passed the apartment complex, although once she realized this, Sara went up and opened up the door hurriedly. She didn't bother taking the elevator, instead she ran up the stairs. Perhaps it was the adrenaline from running all this way, or the fact that she was beyond terrified. She fumbled with the key for a second before stepping into his apartment. She assumed Joe was asleep, and once she saw him in front of the television with eyes closed, Sara was thankful. She wouldn't know where to begin in terms of explaining the situation.
Did Joseph know what kind of job Baby had? She hoped that he didn't. Sara walked around the apartment aimlessly, running the recent events through her head. She looked up at the clock hanging above the window -- it was a quarter to two. The brunette began to fidget with the hem of her shirt as she tried to connect the dots. Darling and Buddy were criminals, and whoever Bats was, he was off the rails. He must've assumed that Sara knew something critical about their business, otherwise he would've had no real reason to point a gun at her.
Baby was the getaway driver. It was the only thing that made sense, really. Darling and Buddy were your modern-day Bonnie and Clyde, and Baby was the guy who made sure they got away. Doc... he seemed like the boss. And Sara, she was just the piece of the puzzle that didn't fit. That's why Bats wanted to put a bullet in her head. She glanced at the television, catching a glimpse of the movie that was playing. "Chaos is what killed the dinosaurs, darling." One of the actors said, causing Sara to reach for the remote. Click.
The apartment grew dark as she turned off the tv, the only source of light was through the windows. She didn't bother turning on anything, though. She didn't want to wake Joseph, nor did she particularly mind the dark. With arms crossed, Sara took a seat in an office chair. She was surrounded by Baby's iPods and musical devices that were spread among the table. She couldn't help but pick up an older iPod, noticing how the screen was broken and it appeared to be utterly useless. Baby would disagree, seeing how he still kept it. Perhaps it was an old gift.
A knock on the door instantly broke through her thoughts. She spun around, quickly crossing to the other side of the room to answer it. She looked through the peephole, confirming that it was the boy she was waiting for. Sara opened it up enough so he could step inside, not missing the concentrated expression etched upon his face. She shut it, instinctively wrapping her arms around him. "I'm sorry." Baby whispered into her hair, sounding defeated. Sara pulled away enough to look at him. "What's happening, Baby?" She questioned, earning a sigh from him.
"They want me to drive tomorrow." Those words sounded all too familiar to Sara, and she despised it. "Tell them that you're done. You can still get out of this." She reasoned, yet he seemed unconvinced nonetheless. "I can't. They know where I live, they know about Joe and now... they know about you." He refused to make eye contact with her, opting to stare down at the wooden floor instead. She exhaled, shaking her head as she tried to find a solution. There had to be an escape from all of this. "What are we going to do, Baby?"
"Let's head west on the twenty, in a car we can't afford, with a plan we don't have."
