Chapter 1: The End!
A radio is heard playing an emergency broadcast. "We interrupt
this program to inform you that the United States is in a state of
national emergency, important instructions will follow. The following
message is transmitted at the request of the United States President.
This is not a test. A nuclear attack has been commenced against the
United States. A long range nuclear missile has been detected and will
strike in approximately five minutes. It is projected to hit Yellowstone
national park resulting in a super eruption; as such citizens are advised
to go underground in any way possible. Please keep your radios with
you as to be informed when it is safe to return above ground"
The next five minutes were very chaotic as people searched for a
shelter from the blast of the nuclear bomb and the resulting super
eruption. For many it felt as if the next few minutes were an
eternity and many still were in denial. Some denied it so much that
they refused to look for shelter, and still many more were simply
unable to go to a shelter; people such as the elderly or disabled who
could not walk or transport themselves were left as it would have
taken too long to move them to a bunker. Almost all of those that
refused to go to a shelter had died. Then after the five minutes were
up, there was a huge boom as the ground started shaking. It rained
rocks and debris out in the westernmost States and for the first few
seconds there was a gigantic fireball. This fireball appeared to be a
second sun for the short amount of time that it was here. The
gigantic blaze had vaporized all organic matter it touched instantly. Of
those on the surface during the catastrophe, they were the lucky ones
when compared to the others who were out on the surface far enough
away not to be vaporized, but close enough to be burned. Many received
burns ranging from first degree burns all the way to third degree
burns all over their body.
"That was what happened on that day, the worst day of my
entire life. I am Frank Evans, and it is around the year 2018, though
we lost track of the days as people are more concerned with staying
alive rather than accurate calendar dates. I am about 20 years old, and
it was around three years ago that Russia had fired their nuclear
bombs. Since that fateful day, the world has never been the same. The
skies are always overcast as debris circles the globe in the jet stream
and rains down as radioactive fallout. The global temperature has fallen
about ten degrees, meaning that food is becoming more and more scarce
as most the plants are dying are off from low temperature, and lack
of sunlight. This is all because the nuclear bombs, as well as the super
volcanic eruption of Yellowstone, have put the world in a nuclear winter.
The former United States Government has fallen and we now live
in what equates to villages, each with its own government. I have now
risen to the role of a leader in my village due to my vast amount of
knowledge in many areas. As such I now have many new responsibilities,
for example, it is now my responsibility to keep everyone safe and
make decisions based on my village's needs.
I also live here with my brother Martin, the only surviving
member of my family. Before I became leader of my Village, my
father was leader; unfortunately, the radiation had gotten to my
parents as well as many others in the early days. Now I take care of
my brother and try to keep him safe, although our relationship is now
a bit rocky as he has entered the stage of teenage years when people
are rebellious.
My village has strict rules, as without rules people become savages.
However, we still have democracy, as we all vote on our laws and
militia leaders. We are working to unite with other villages and have
united with two other villages. We do not have names for our villages
as we refer to each one by the name of their leader. Following that
logic would make ours be called Frank's Village. The two other villages
that we have united with are Mark's village and Luke's village. We have
a goal of uniting with all the villages, though not to restore the U.S.
but rather to make a civilization again. We refer to the group that all
our villages are a part of as the United Villages of Democracy.
Even though the former Government said to keep our radios three
years ago, they have now completely disintegrated like the sand on a
beach. Now radios only broadcast in small areas due to a near complete
lack of working radio towers, but these radios do not broadcast music.
The radios we have are CB radios used for communication among
survivors.
We have a limited power supply and use it wisely, as to not run
out too soon, and our more technologically minded people are working on
ways of producing electricity so that we don't run out of power. We
have also fixed a few radio towers, and are working on fixing more as
time passes. Our quality of life is not nearly as good as before, but
at least we have homes, both built from scratch and repaired from the
ruins created by the Russian's missile strike and subsequent super eruption.
All of this to say that society as we knew it in America has ended,
and much of the world is also affected by this great catastrophe, for
now anyways, it appears as if we are not very careful than this will
be the end."
