"Ruby!" I felt being rudely shaken. "Ahhh you stupid mermaid, is this a time to be sleeping?" of course. who could that be other than my very own best friend. At times I swear she's the most annoying creature on earth. "Ruby!" She slapped my tail hard.
"Aquata! No tails, remember! we made that promise!" Back in 6th grade when we learnt (the hard way) that tails were the most sensitive parts of a mermaid body we promised not to do tail slaps.
"This is getting serious Rubes. My dad told us they've just sent sharks out to find you, you can't hide in this cave for long." My heart lept into my throat, more so because Aquata seemed to be legitimately scared, and Aquata never got scared, no matter what happened. But right now her amethyst colored eyes were so wide I feared they might actually fall out, making me want to laugh at her expression and cry at my position right now at the same time.
An inappropriate joke rose to my vocal chords but I held it down, realizing the seriousness of the situation. I've really gone too far this time, I guess, and for the first time in my life, I actually believed that there was no way out of this one. My voice got stuck in my throat.
"What do I do now Aqua?" I squeaked.
"Go to a place they can't find you." She held my hands and gave me the most determined fake look she could manage making me hold back a laugh, despite, again the situation (sometimes even I don't know why I am the way I am but I just can't help it. My life is a chain of awkward situations.)
"Where...?" I admit wholeheartedly that both Aquata and I are probably the craziest mermaids in the history of mermaids but When i asked 'where' I honestly expected her to say something understandable, like "to heaven, take these pills and kill yourself before they kill you." But no.
"To the human world. Land." She said. and that, was the stupidest moment of my entire life.
"Thanks Aqua! What a dumb idea!"
"Do it. Go" She practically dragged me out of the cave and pushed me all the way on until we reached the point where the shore was only a 5 minute speed swim away.
"What are you even asking me to do.." By now my mind was spinning full speed. Humans. legs..land...
"Just don't let them find out who you are okay? Humans can't do what we can, and Mermaid blood is the essence of life for them. Don't let them know who you are Ruby!"
and then....I smiled.
Maybe this would be the greatest adventure of my life.
"You crazy mermaid...." Aquata sighed when she looked at me. I hugged her tightly and kissed her cheek.
and then..I swam on.
