Chapter 1

She tore through the alley, ducked into a doorway, and tried to squeeze into nothingness. This couldn't be happening to her, could it? It seemed like a dream. It could be a dream. She wanted it to be a dream. But as she peeked outside through a crack in the door, she knew it was real. She took a deep breath and then let it out as she told herself, " I'm a medium."

Not the medium between small and large. The spirit medium. Scarlett Roxanne Castro could see spirits. Scarlett never really asked to be a medium. It just kind of....happened. She got it from her Mom. When her Mom turned 15, she started seeing spirits and up to this day, she still does. But Scarlett was completely new to this.

Scarlett peeked through the door again and saw that the spirit was gone. She crept out the door and ran down the alley, not stopping for anything. Her combat boots thumped against the pavement as she ran while her coat flailed out behind her in a cape type style.

"Scarlett......Scarlett....." What was that!? Scarlett whipped her head around, but saw nothing.

"Help me Scarlett......" There it was again!

"NO! LEAVE ME ALONE!" Scarlett screamed. She was too young for this. Couldn't it wait till later? Give her some more time? As everything blurred passed her, the voice kept calling her name over and over. Why wouldn't it leave her alone? The end of the alley was coming closer, and she went slower.

"SCARLETT ROXANNE CASTRO!" Yelled a familiar voice.

Scarlett slowly turned around and saw someone she wouldn't have expected to see at this time of hour.

"Mom!?"

As the figure came into view, Scarlett was face to face with her mother.

"Scarlett Roxanne Castro," Her mother repeated. "What in the name of god are you doing here at this time of hour!?"

Scarlett's eyes widened in fear, and for the first time in her life, she couldn't speak.
