Chapter 3

"y = log x . If y = 10, then what is x?" Asked Mr. DuPonts, as he circled the room. It was third period Algebra. Scarlett squirmed uncomfortably in her seat. She was never really good at Algebra. And what made matters worse, was that she couldn't focus on anything because all she could think about was that spirit she saw last night. Why did this have to happen to her? She thought as she doodled on her notebook. Scarlett looked up at the clock. Fifteen minutes left. She glanced over at Jessica, who sat beside her. Jessica was listening intently as Mr. DuPonts explained to a student why his answer was wrong.

Scarlett bit the end of her pen. Every now and then, she glanced at the clock and counted down the minutes.

"So class, next week we will have our Algebra test so make sure you study." Mr. DuPonts called over the bell.

Scarlett scooped up her books and ran to her locker to meet up with Evan. They had made a plan to meet each other at the lockers between classes. As Scarlett reached her locker, an arm wrapped around her shoulders. She looked up to see Evan, smiling down at her.

"Hey Evan." Scarlett smiled.

"Hi."

"Do you have the French notes?" Scarlett asked, shoving her books into her locker.

"Yes and no...?" Evan replied, unsure.

"I thought I told you to have them ready for me! I have a French paper due tomorrow." She frowned.

"Scarlett....I know your lying.." Evan said sharply.

Scarlett was confused. "Um...no? I'm pretty sure I have a paper due tomorrow."

Evan rolled his eyes. "Not about the paper! About last night. I know you didn't have to meet your mom at a "certain place"."

Scarlett just stared at Evan. How did he know she was lying or not? He wasn't even there last night!

Evan raised his eyebrows. "Well?"

"Well what?" Scarlett snapped. "You weren't even there last night at Sweet Treats, so you wouldn't know! Why don't you just butt out!?" She grabbed her books, slammed her locker and stomped down the hall. Why did he even care?

"Scarlett!" Evan yelled.

Scarlett justed walked on, pretending she hadn't heard him. Once she reached Madame Dabney's class, a cold chill ran down her spine. She pulled on her sweater and sat down.

"Scarlett......help me." A voice whispered.

Scarlett looked around her. No one was talking to her. She looked behind her, but no one was paying attention to her. As she turned around and looked up, she came face to face with a boy, who looked unfamiliar.

"Scarlett..." He whispered. "Help.....me..." Then he disappeared. Just like that!

Scarlett screamed. The whole class turned to look at her and she blushed, her face burning with embarrassment.

"Ms. Castro, is everything alright?" Madame Dabney asked, cocking her head to the side.

All Scarlett could do was nod. Did that just happen? What did he want? Scarlett glanced at the doorway and saw the boy again, leaning against the door frame, arms crossed and smirking as if he had a dirty little secret. Then, just like before, he disappeared into thin air. Scarlett's eyes widened in fear.

She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. If only she could go back in time and go to the very last day she'd ever be normal again. Her 15th birthday. That day was a special day and she hadn't expected anything from the spirit world. Because her mother worked that night of her birthday, Mrs.Castro took Scarlett out for a special birthday dinner the next day. When they had walked home that night, an elderly man walked by and Scarlett brushed passed him and as she did she said, "Excuse me."

Yeah, nothing special there. It seemed normal. But it wasn't. As she turned around to look back at the man, he disappeared, just like the boy had. She was horrified. There was a cynical energy in the air, every time a spirit was near her. It sent chill's down her spine. Maybe once or twice since then, she hadn't been able to sleep because the spirits were calling her name. So, it just kind of happened. Randomly.

Scarlett then snapped back to reality.
