Chapter 6
The memory of yesterday kept replaying in Scarlett's mind. Seeing the spirit boy, him telling her she was beautiful. It was all too much. And maybe Hailey was right about Scarlett being a freak. I mean, your average 15 year old girl wouldn't see spirits and then them telling you your beautiful! Like really.
Scarlett lay in bed that morning, not wanting to move. Evan and Jessica had called her all day, but Scarlett just ignored them.
"Scarlett!" Mrs.Castro called.
No answer.
"Scarlett..." Mrs. Castro yelled.
Still no answer.
"SCARLETT!" Mrs. Castro screamed.
Scarlett rolled out of bed and looked down the stairs.
"What?" She said, angrily.
Mrs.Castro just looked at Scarlett. "Honey, you can't stay in your room all day."
Scarlett crossed her arms. "Maybe I can." She shot back. It was obvious that Scarlett was upset. And Mrs.Castro didn't like it.
Scarlett walked back into her room and closed the door. She curled up under the blankets. It was freezing in the house, and she was only wearing short shorts and a tank top. She closed her eyes for a minute.
"Scarlett..."
Her eyes snapped wide open and she saw the spirit boy. She jumped out of bed and ran and locked her room door. No way was her mom going to walk in on them. Scarlett leaned against the door and stared at the spirit. He stared at her. He watched her every move.
"What do you want?" Scarlett whispered.
"You." He replied simply.
Scarlett was taken aback. Was he serious? Was she on an episode of Punk'd?
"Um...er..." Scarlett stammered.
"My name is Luke." He said, winking.
Scarlett was breathless. Was it possible that a spirit could actually like a living girl? It was unnatural for the dead to love a living person.
"Why are you here?" Scarlett asked carefully.
Luke sat on Scarlett's bed. "I came back from the afterlife to find love." He paused. "And I think I found it."
Scarlett just stared. Luke then stood up and walked over to Scarlett. He put his hand into hers and took his other hand and used his thumb to massage her cheek. Scarlett was absolutely frozen. And cold.
Luke's hand ran down her face all the way to her thighs. Scarlett was getting very uncomfortable.
"That isn't possible." Scarlett said, trying to get Luke's hand away from her leg.
"Actually it is. You see, there is one chance for everyone in the afterlife to find true love. So they come back to earth, and try to find it. If they find it in the time they have on earth, they are sent back to earth and reunited with friends, family. But everyone will act like nothing ever happened." Luke said, simply.
"But..." Luke said suddenly. "The love has to be with a medium." He stared deeply into her eyes.
"So...your able to smell, touch and feel?" Scarlett asked, taking Luke's hand and examining it.
"Yes.But only to mediums."
There was a long silence. Scarlett stared at Luke. Luke stared at Scarlett. Then, he took Scarlett's hand again, bent down and kissed her. His soft, pink lips touched hers in such passion. He opened her mouth with his tongue. Scarlett kissed back. Then she stopped.
"This is too weird." She shook her head. "Me? Kissing a spirit?"
Scarlett walked over to her bed and lay down. This was too much for her to handle.
"Scarlett?" Mrs. Castro called, trying to open the door. "Is everything all right in there? Your door's locked."
Scarlett rolled her eyes. Way to point out the obvious. She stood up and opened the door. But before she did, she looked around to see if Luke was there. He wasn't.
"Scarlett, why was your door locked?"
Scarlett didn't answer. She just stared at the floor.
"Mom...?"
"Yes, Scarlett?"
Scarlett took a deep breath. "Is it possible for a spirit to love you?"
