Chapter 9

When I woke up the next morning… well, it was 3pm, so it was afternoon… my friends had all left me so I’m guessing that Nick had said that I couldn’t sleep last night and they’d decided not to wake me.  I got a quick shower and dressed in a pair of jogging bottoms and a vest top, planning just to stay in the house today and relax.

I walked downstairs and into the kitchen when my phone rang in my pocket. The caller I.D. said that it was Allie, so I smiled and answered the phone.

“Hey Allie.” I smiled.

“Ebony! Oh my gosh, you will never believe what’s happened!” she cried frantically down the phone.

“Allie, calm down, you’re making me scared! What’s going on?” I asked.

“You know you said that you heard screaming in the school… it’s the school nurse… she’s… she’s dead! They found her body last night, and my dad has just told me now.” She cried.

Allie’s dad was a cop which meant that he was always way over protective of her, thus meaning that he would tell her of any dangers that may arise. I had heard the screaming, and that sound would always haunt me, but murder? I didn’t think that anyone was killed.

I swallowed down the wave of nausea that washed over me and grabbed hold of a chair that I used to steady myself.

“Ebony?! Are you still there?” she asked.

I made a little strangled sound as the loneliness suddenly hit me. The school nurse knew, I knew she knew. She had practically told me, but I was too stupid not to do anything about it, like going to see her so we could figure this whole thing out. And now I had nobody. The tears streamed down my face as I sunk down to the floor.

“Ebs? Talk to me?” Allie begged.

I quickly said goodbye to her and ran out to my car. I needed to go and see the one person who I knew would make me feel better; Tom. I needed my best friend to hold me and tell me everything was going to be alright. I drove away from my house like a bat out of hell and quickly reached Tom’s house.

I ran to his front door and knocked ferociously on the door. The door opened and I only saw a glimpse of a tall figure before knowing that it was Tom. I threw myself into his arms and hugged him tightly. He stood there for a minute before wrapping his arms around me and pulling me closer to him a brotherly hug.

“Ebony, what’s wrong?” he whispered into my hair.

I opened my mouth, but all that could escape from it was a heart wrenching sob that shook my whole frame. He immediately gripped me tighter put his hands under my thighs, lifting my legs to wrap around his waist and me resting against his hip. I buried my head into the curve of my neck which give me so much comfort that I almost sobbed again from relief. He carried me into the living room where he sat down and pulled me onto my lap; me being not in the best state to pull away from him just yet.

“What’s wrong beautiful?” he asked softly.

I pulled my face away from his neck and looked at him.

“They killed her. They killed the school nurse.” I sobbed.

“There was a murder?” Tom asked shocked.

I nodded and he pulled me against his chest, hugging me tightly. I gripped onto his tee shirt and sobbed into it.

“Thank god it wasn’t you, I don’t think I could live without you. Thank goodness they didn’t kill you too.” Tom whispered into my hair.
