Chapter 12
“EBONY! EBONY!” who the hell was calling my name. I couldn’t even bring myself to open my eyes and look. I was too tired. I felt damp all over, probably because it was raining, but I didn’t really care. The forest floor was so comfy.
In the back of my mind I was fully aware that I really shouldn’t be here, and it was most certainly dangerous for me to be here, but I really couldn’t open my eyes and make any movement.
“EBONY BYRNE, CAN YOU HEAR ME?” voices called.
‘Yes I can hear you’ I wanted to scream. But I couldn’t. I moved my finger in an attempt to be heard, but it only moved a few leaves a few millimetres and no sound was made.
“Oh crap.” I heard somebody gasp. They were close, they had finally come for me.
My head was lifted up and placed in somebody’s lap. They stroked my forehead in a comforting gesture and I immediately felt in ease.
“SHE’S OVER HERE!” the person yelled, “Oh Ebony, what did they do to you?” the voice whispered to me.
They? Who were they?
I heard footsteps running and I soon heard my mom’s worried voice.
“Oh my gosh! Who would do this?! Ebony, can you hear me honey?!” she cried frantically.
“It’s okay Mrs Byrne, don’t worry, she’s breathing.” Wait, was that Tom? What was he doing here? We were fighting.
“What’s happened to her?” A familiar voice asked. Wait, was that Nick’s dad? Freaking perfect.
“I think she’s collapsed… probably from exhaustion. If we can bring her back to our house then I can treat her, there is no need in taking her to hospital.” I groaned at the thought of having to spend any more time with Nick than usual.
“I think she’s waking.” Nick piped in.
No duh, genius.
“Can you lift her back to the car, son?” Nick’s dad asked.
“Of course.” Nick said.
I felt my body being lifted into a pair of strong arms that held me securely against a warm chest. Wow, Nick was going to make a girl very happy someday. Wait, why the hell did I just think that? I must be going delusional. But I couldn’t help but notice how he held me, almost protectively, against his chest, as if I was the most precious and delicate thing in the world. It felt… nice.
A smile tugged at my lips and I let out a sigh. I no longer felt any pain, I was just really tired, and I felt safe in his arms.
“She’s smiling.” Ivy whispered from beside me.
“I know.” Nick commented.
“Must be something about you that she likes.” Ivy said.
I’m just going to ignore that last comment.
“Ebony, if you can hear me… I’m sorry… Come back to me…”
“I think… I think I’m in love with you.”
“Please wake up, Ebony… I need to hear your voice.”
“Do you enjoy scaring me, Ebs?”
“I love you… please don’t leave me.”
I drifted in and out of unconsciousness, never having the energy to open my eyes or make any sudden movement. All I could do was listen to the voice that was talking to me and just hope that I would get better. I think it was Tom…
