Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room... One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon. His bed was next to the only window of the room. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back. The men talked for hours everyday. They talked about their wives, families, homes, jobs, the vacations they've been to... anything and everything! Every afternoon, when the man near the window would sit up, he would pass his time by to his roommate, all the things he could see outside the window...
Slowly, the other man began to live for that one hour each day, where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activities of the world outside...
The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their toy boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every color. A fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance.
As the man by the window described all this in detail, the man on the other side would imagine the scene through closed eyes... One warm afternoon, the man by the window described a parade passing by. Although the other man could not hear the band, he could see every thing through his mind's eye...
Weeks and months passed... One morning, the day nurse arrived with water for their baths, only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep... She seemed very sad to with the loss of a happy man... Soon, the other man was informed about his roommates death. He felt heart-broken. He lost his true friend.
A few days passed and curiosity took over his mind. So he asked the nurse if he could be shifted to the other bed, by the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch and after making sure that he was comfortable in his new bed, she left him alone.
Slowly, painfully, the man propped himself up on one elbow, strained his neck to look outside... but was completely bewildered to see a plain wall... He quickly called the nurse and asked, "When did they build this wall and why? I can't see the park!" "Which park?" said the nurse...
"My roommate would always describe the outside world to me... He said that he could see a park from this window... But I only see a wall here..."
To this, the nurse chuckled slightly and said, "He would describe it to you?"
"Yes..."
"But that man was blind... Perhaps he just wanted to make you feel better..."
There is tremendous happiness in making others happy, despite our own personal problems... Shared grief is half the sorrow... But, happiness when shared is doubled... Remember that!
